50i oil consumption

I have a 2012 50i that has about 8700 miles on it. This past weekend while on a 150 mile trip I got a message saying the engine oil level was at minimum amount. Is it normal for this engine to use a quart of oil in this few miles? Or should I take it in to the dealer even though it's not due for the oil change for 6000 more miles.

I need to add a quart every 5000 miles or so.

Apparently, this is normal oil consumption. I think mine needed a quart after ~3000 miles. Just go to your dealer and they can top it off.

perfectly normal bro.

Perfectly normal.

Just FYI- On M cars BMW had a spec of 1 liter per 1000km.... (or 1 quart per ~600 miles)

Top it off, BUT do not mix oils...if it has BMW oil in it, top with the same.

I had to mix oils since I was in Northern Michigan where thee were no BMW dealers. I'll have to take it in and have the dealer change the oil.

Lame BMW. My 2001 3.0 just did 5000 on an oil change. Didn't use a noticeable amount on the dipstick.
It has 350,000 miles.
While that is within BMWs spec. No other manufacturer would allow that out of a brand ne vehicle. (Once past break in) IE again before the next service.

Incorrect. Ford, GM, Toyota, Audi all have the same guideline, for a start. Pretty sure it is much broader than those four.

if it's a lease, dont sweat it.

Hate seeing someone get raped by the dealer for an oil change....

Give it time for the engine to break in. My 35d used a quart of oil before the first oil change and again before the second oil change. I have not had to add any oil between changes since. Buy a quart of oil and keep in the X5 so you don't get caught away from the dealer again when you get a quart low again. That is what I did.
