Engine Light Code Reader - erasing codes
 

I've had an Actron code reader for some time.

The engine light came on on my 2007 X5 3.0L.

The reader displayed two codes (the same code, one with "pending")
P0442 EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Small)

I understand you can get this if you don't get the gas cap on tight.

So I go to erase the code.

Procedure is:
1. Plug it in
2. Turn on ignition
3. Press erase for 3 seconds
4. Press erase for 3 seconds

I get a "no link" message at this point. And the instructions say wait 10 seconds and do it again.

Needless to say, I can do it till the cows come home with no joy.

Any experience on the list with this?

To turn on the ignition, I insert the "key" with the brake pressed and do not push the start button.
