E70 30d 20" wheels and arches advice..

Hi All,

i'm new to the forums and I've just got a 2009 E70 30d.

It's come with the standard 18" run flat wheels and tyres and i'm wanting to change these to a 20" wheel and wanted some advice from all you professionals.

I've found the wheels that I want, I just want to get an idea of what size and tyre I should be ordering?

VERTINI WHEELS

these are the wheels, i'd like them to be staggered, so might I need some spacers?

I noticed that on some of the pictures on here, people have wider arches on there cars, where's the best place to get these? I'm in Australia, so they don't have many places to source BMW parts from. I don't mind ordering these to be shipped over.

Any advice would be great.. hopefully i'll be getting the car looking as I want it...

also i was going to wait till I got the wheels, then maybe lower it a bit depending on how it looks? any advice is great.

many thanks and I look forward to your replies.

cheers.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm from Australia too and I got my 20" wheel arches from the US via eBay.

They're genuine BMW item and cost a whole lot less than they do if you bought them locally (even factoring the shipping cost).

If you decide to go this route, I highly recommend buying the rivet tool the seller also sells. It will make fitting the new wheel arches, much, much, much easier. With this tool, you don't even have to remove any wheel.

It took me around an hour to complete the swap from 18" to 20" wheels arches with no prior experience doing this. I simply read one of the threads in this forum on how they did it (paying particular attention to where all the screws and clips are located).

If you can't find the seller, PM me and I'll see if I can still find it for you (it's been a while since I bought them).

PS. I also bought from the same seller genuine BMW Titanium grill and bumper mess. Again a lot less than they cost locally (ie. almost half price).

Thanks for the info Hammer, yeah, i'd noticed that there isn't much over here in the way of aftermarket stuff, so it does make sense to get it from the US.

If you do have the contact details of where you got them that would be very useful.

I will check out ebay and see if there are people on there selling? I've got an account so it's pretty easy to pay for it that way.

cheers for the advice.

Nice wheels !
I personnaly like the Monaco.

For the flared fenders, they are worth it.
Bought my 20" without them, and I disliked them.
Installed the flares since, much better.

For the tires, go with what's used by BMW:
275/40R20 F
315/35R20 R
Wheels, 10" in front, and 11" in the back.

Run Flat tires or not, that's your choice.
If you go with non-RFT, get yourself a car club card for the towing, or purchase (thru E_Bay), the spare tire kit.
This one goes in the floor in the back, if you don't have a 3rd row seat.
If you do, Car Club card or either Continental or BMW instant puncture repair kit.

Post pictures when it's completed !
You will sacrifice MPG, but if you're going for the look, it's worth it.

Here are my 20" staggered on my 35D which replace the original 18"s.
I installed the wider Arches too.
The ride with the non-RFT tires is so much better than the stock RFTs...!!!

nice, what size tyres are you running there?

are they the 315's on the back?

OneFastX5 09-26-2012 01:00 PM

Yes, 275/40/20 front and 315/35/20 rear.

Here's the seller where I got my 20' wheel flares from: BMW E70 X5 Fender wheel arch flare Extension kit 20" 21 | eBay

Here's a tip. Send him a message and ask how much to buy directly from him, you'd be surprised how much additional discount you'll get.

Good luck.

Here's mine:

I've paid 305$, shipping included on E-Bay for the flares from BMW of Newton.
Great service, and had them in less than 3 days !

Ordered my 20" wheels today, hopefully they will be here this week.

any recommendations on tyres?

I have a spare in the back of the car, so don't really want run flats.

Arches ordered from the US too, so they should be coming soon too.
