The concern (at least for me) is with accidents happening when mounting the bikes on the roof rack and potential costly damage to the panoramic roof just because it's in close proximity... I know the rack itself does not touch the roof and that was not the concern at all.

As for potential damage to the bikes, some contend that there's a higher road hazard risk for bikes mounted on the roof compared to those tucked away behind the vehicle. Go figure... I wonder if there are any actual studies comparing the two methods or if it's all just opinions out there.

The BMW rack?

The OEM BMW rack that goes into the tow hooks is awesome. It's well built piece of equipment. The manual says it holds up to 60pounds or so. I've attached all sorts of things to the rack besides bikes and it's been fine.

I don't think the rack location is as much of a variable as the driver for impact. I do remember reading that a rear end collision is the most common. I am used to roof racks and remember the clearance limits. Some may not, though, and those mistakes cost $$$. My bikes are carbon with Dura Ace and Campagnolo Super Record so grit is my major concern. If I had a mountain bike that wouldn't be an issue. I also like fork mounts so the bikes don't bump into each other, saves the paint.

Anyway, as long as we are all riding bikes, this is all pretty much moot. Enjoy your riding!

I'm still with Ultegra on a very entry-level Schwinn. I'm planning to upgrade to a more mid-level bike but haven't made up my mind yet about what I'll be getting. And if I win the Lotto, it will be a Pinarello Dogma 65.1 with Dura Ace Di2, and it will ride inside my X5 in the cargo area, wrapped in bubble wrap, chamois, and silk!
