I don't think the rack location is as much of a variable as the driver for impact. I do remember reading that a rear end collision is the most common. I am used to roof racks and remember the clearance limits. Some may not, though, and those mistakes cost $$$. My bikes are carbon with Dura Ace and Campagnolo Super Record so grit is my major concern. If I had a mountain bike that wouldn't be an issue. I also like fork mounts so the bikes don't bump into each other, saves the paint.
Anyway, as long as we are all riding bikes, this is all pretty much moot. Enjoy your riding!
