Thanks. The dealer wants $495 so I will be going with a former BMW mechanic who is well established and will charge $285.

That's how much they want in OKC? My stealership will probably be the same... :(

Yes and I wonder how many more will be needed because I replaced the battery once already when it was under the original warranty.

I have an 07 X5 and about two months ago I replaced the OEM battery with a BOSCH battery from Pep Boys recommended by a BMW mechanic, no needed to registered the battery, one thing he told me, the new battery model from BMW needs to be register.

He lied to you, Or he is ignorant.

The 'need to register' is determined by the CAR, and not the battery!!!

so, today opened the trunk. the old interstate battery leaked out. no wonder why starting power felt weak. So the guy goes to pepboys pays 150 and they replace battery and come out to say that there are no lights on the dash now.. what to do?

If you want something that will last I would get an AGM battery. I was lucky enough to get this type of battery under warranty. Since the AGM battery have had zero problems with low battery warning I was getting before. Anyway, I digress.

I would recommend
- AGM as above
- if you don't want to lose any settings then connect a battery charger but leave it on supply mode.
- you have the cable necessary to code the battery. Look up b m w coding dot com site where it will explain how to code the battery. The software is all free.

the guy got the battery for free at pepboys since they messed up his car and I just sent him dealer to register and code the new battery,
I would have replaced the battery with exact same one to avoid this
