Nav screen replacement
 

The backlight of my wife's 08 x5's nav screen just went out. Unfortunately I dont think this will be covered by the CPO warranty. I believe it is an 8.8 inch screen. I see that people have replaced the LCD for the E53's. Has anyone replaced just the LCD screen on an E70 without getting the whole oem unit?

Are you looking for an upgraded unit with new multi-functions or just to replace the OEM screen?

You can replace just the screen only. CPO normally doesn't cover the NAV since they Consider it an aftermarket accessory even from factory. It is stupid. Call BMW NA and ask them for any help towards it. How many miles on car? Also check your state for reasonable merchantability laws regarding warranty.

Never hurts to ask. Your SA should also help you get some help on covering the cost or labor since it isn't cheap. You an find screens sometimes on eBay or ask around. They are easy to install.

Thank for the advice. The car has 65k miles. I was thinking that since the screen is not just for the nav or the radio (e.g. climate controls), there was a chance it could be covered. However, when I spoke to my SA, he did not think it would be. I will start hunting for a used one on ebay. Since I am fairly handy, I may open up the monitor portion and see if I can replace it with a new LCD screen as well. Will post a DIY if I do that!

That is INSANELY priced. These things go for $400 TOPS on eBay.

1. READ the cpo document.

2. DO NOT 'talk' to the SA.

3, As pointed out above, the screen is not the navigation system. The coverage will be driven by the CPO document.

4. If there is ambiguous language in the CPO document I could provide you with language to give to the SA to place in the work order that would increase the likelihood of approval (or create a challengeable situation if they deny). The CPO includes a funny mix of coverage- based on how something fails as well as what the item does.

5. The last time I read the CPO, it states that the navigation system (and components of that system) are excluded. Fine. But a car without the Navigation option DOES have a display- hence they cannot call the display a component of the navigation system, if a car without nav has one! They might try, but I think they would not succeed in a challeneg.

But most people just verbally ask the dealer, shrug, complain...and pay.

Jeremy I agree. There is one on eBay right now for around $350 shipped. If gt3 is reading this post he should just but it and call it a day. It's cheap enough. The install is simple enough. Just wanted to give him a place to start. Some sellers are boards don't know asking price so they put a number out there until a reference number is given or shown.

ARD - language in all warranties always seems to be ambiguous at best.
The screen is part of the car/SUV but not that particular type of screen. I have learned over the years to get warranty coverage on "non covered" parts due to the ambiguous language.
