Overall quality of the interior!

Ill be honest there a bunch of creaks i my X. I personally thing they used to much plastic combined with leather and then plastic dont mix well.
even with nothing in the cup holder it rattle...
when i have my knee against the drivers door it creaks...
backdoors creak! i know its not a bentley but
better fitment of parts and overall better material could have been used!
Anyone else think so?
Cheers Rob

ps thank god that exhasut roar drowns out mostly every concevable noise:rofl:

The only time my 2008 E70 creaked or rattled was in the cold weather. I called them the cold weather creaks. As soon as the temperature hits 30 or so the creaks would start. Warm weather all was quiet.

It was the the same with my 2010 X6 and my current 2013. :dunno:

Check your tire pressure and also tire tread/balance.

Suge206 01-17-2013 04:05 PM

08 4.8 w/ no squeaks to speak of

rh71 01-17-2013 05:18 PM

What year is your X?

seattle 01-17-2013 05:29 PM

yep, cold weather does bring the creaks.
Experiencing 27-32F weather these days in Seattle (rather unusual for this area).

Also noticed my x5 is the only vehicle that does not get any ice on windows and body in the morning. 3 other vehicles in driveway are completely white in the morning (fog overnight + freezing temp). Not the x5. It somehow stays completely clear.
Kinda weird.

Seattle - kind funny you say that I noticed that here too! I kept my car outside the other night and it was not frosted over like the other cars. Strange.

COLD WEATHER - will bring the creaks in the best of cars.

Good I hope that's the case...can't wait to dump these run flats ASAP

ALPINE_X5 01-21-2013 02:13 AM

Yeah RFT's are not great. I understand the concept/reason but the ride quality is just dismal compared to non-RFT's. I would rather take my chances with the mobility kit ;)

Just to comment on the overall quality of the interior. With the following issues on a car after 2 or three years I would say the quality of the interior is very substandard for a car of this price:

- Light switch worn away after 2 years
- Bubbling trim on steering wheel around buttons after 2 years
- Glove box trim is curling up and reventing the glove box from opening
- Rear vent control trim area showing heavy wear with minor usage.
- 3rd rpw seatbelt clips broken multiple times.

Great, something to look forward to in the next couple years! :D

My 2010 was lemoned at 23 months, with 32k miles and was pristine. Interior and exterior 'as new'.

I'm going to posit that interior wear is a function of care.

Also, will people stop referring to "RFT" as if it is a single tire????? Michelin Latitude RFTs are far superior to all other RFTs, and with 18-19" rims I read few complaints

I don't mind the Bridgestone run flats on our 35d. Maybe it is because we have the 18 inch wheels? :dunno: Then again, I don't expect it to handle and feel like my M3 either.

I also haven't noticed many squeaks or rattles in the few months we have had the vehicle. Overall, I feel the interior is pretty nice. Wish ours had the extended leather dash though.

I do agree with Noodle though that it seems BMW always has quality issues with some of their interior trim pieces and the e70 is no exception.

WWONG 01-23-2013 02:06 AM

Creaks out the ass from my 2012. From the rear seats from the bin under the rear AC controls, from both B-pillars, any silver aluminum accent trim under the wood, from the driver's door handle/pit when touched. Paid 70k for my near-fully loaded diesel, and it's crap to the max.

Contrary to other users, my car creaks more in hot weather. Semi-quiet in cold. This is definitely the last BMW I'm getting, seeing as how their prices are the highest vs the competition, sporty driving is gone (see: electric steering), styling is going downhill, and quality is a joke.

grey 01-23-2013 07:12 AM

I had few spontaneous cracks on plastic trim which was replaced under warranty. D pillar plastic trim are very noisy most of the time regardless of the weather.

Never come across with these issues in my past Japanese vehicles, you should send this photo to BMW NA

Wow I really opened a can of worms with this thread!:wow:

Ps I gotta bring my X back to the dealer when I get some time. Passenger front door rattles in the arm rest again, gets pretty darn loud!
That crap felt tape that they put on any issue now adays has failed!
So I'll politely ask them.....can u fix the issue now and not put a band aid on the Awwwwey!:D
Cheap dealers
Always looking to cut corners
There just like employees, they need to be tainted everyday
:D

seattle 01-28-2013 01:38 PM

I kinda feel sorry for the dealership service guys sometimes. Some of the issues (creaks and rattles) are just due to bad design (hard plastic in contact with leather). They can't really do much about it, except put felt tape as band aid fix.

Thats a great point
ill take that into consideration when talking to the dealership. no sense in being hard on something that is a system wide issue.
Cheers
but damn that rattling is annoying!:iagree:
just gotta go faster or put the sound up...
i guess that saying "dont sweat the small stuff applies here!
Seattle: have a beautiful day! at least its not raining right?:dunno: LOL

Hmmm. My wife's Volvo V50 is 7 years old, has 106k miles, and not a squeek, creak, or rattle in the cabin, no matter how cold. Can't say that for my E70.

My '99 Corolla got none of that too! :D

Of course it's raining!
Had a dry streak for past 2 weeks, with temps at 25 at night, sunny during day.
Had something called "temperature inversion", where nearby mountains had 40F closer to top, but 1000ft below, temps were in 20s.
But it's back to normal now - 40F, rain/mist, low clouds (more like grey mass).

I disagree with this. I am quite anal about car care and clean and condition the interior and exterior for that matter regularly. If you search the ailments that I posted you will find that the problems are all too common. My M3 has bubbling interior trim pain, also a generic problem with the titanium trim, but not one other issue. My M3 is 10 years old so I harldy think it's a function of care. Incidentally manufactured in Germany, perhaps some correlation?

I have always been a BMW fanatic but these problems are making me think that I would not buy another X5.

X5X 01-29-2013 05:30 AM

I've got the extended leather pack + leather dashboard, so not much plastic showing :D But I have never had a problems on my past X5s, only my '08 when the glove box cover/lid Started to peel, which is apparently fairly common on the 3.0si. I have seen several in the flesh with the same problem.

m34vert 01-30-2013 12:27 PM

IMO the seating areas are well designed with the exception of leather on the plastic. Most of that noise comes when you enter/exit the vehicle.

The luggage compartment specifically the lower lift gate is a creaky mess. The overlapping plastic chatters in the cold. I lined the underside of the overlapping piece with felt tape and have almost completely eliminated the noise.

The new tire's I put on have helped/hurt this though. Car rides much smoother now over cracks so less vibration, car's also silent so you hear everything. I am hearing something again out of the back area, will have to investigate or drop the right foot and drown it out more!
