Speedometer Accuracy
 

Picked up a 2010 X5 CPO 2 weeks ago.

I have my Galaxy Note 2 on the windshield running Waze and noticed that the X5 Speedometer is running about 4 MPH higher than what is displayed on Waze.

Should i just get it checked out at the Service Center? Should they have checked accuracy during the CPO process?

dont worry all BMW speedometer are optimistic it is a well known fact.

Well known, documented and discussed fact. There is no calibration possible

I thought there was coding that eliminated this? I could have sworn I've seen it in someone's thread before....

Yes, you can make it show the right speed by coding. BMW designed it, by default, to show higher speed. That could be just on the digital display (that you activate by coding).

the speed is calculated by counting the "clicks" coming from the speed sensors and it takes into consideration the difference in speed between the front/rear and left/right wheels... if you manage to spin one of the wheels, your speedometer will still show 0 MPH (kmh), as the other 3 wheels are not spinning... not like old cars where you could get 100 MPH just by spinning in the snow/sand.

the number of clicks that used per mile for the odometer and digital speedometer are different from the number of clicks for the same mile in the analog speedometer - those values are specific to the car trim and theoretically can be changed in NCS Expert - i just have not heard of anyone in BMW world doing that, but supposedly someone in VW had done so...

brian5 is correct, speedometer is of by 5mph and thru coding it can be adjusted
