Alpine White OR Black Saphire - that is the question....
So the new lease signing looming within next weeks, the debate is now which color.
I am planning on getting 2013 X5d with 214-style wheels, almost fully loaded, and with running boards. And the interior is black (likely with aluminum trim). I've been debating between Saphire Black and Alpine White, have seen both colors on the lot. But I'd like to hear from members here on their own personal ownership experience with either of these colors. This is not a debate of color preference - this is sharing of your experience of what worked and what didn't - for you, as initial days of ownership worn off and reality settled in, and you had to deal with washing (hand or car wash), scratches, swirls, snow, salt, road dirt and debris, etc. Did you have any regrets getting black or white, would you wish you had different color, and why. Fire away! P.S. I know from pure practical point of view I should go with silver, but that is not my option. Also, I used to own Space Gray and Platinum Gray x5s in the past, so those colors ruled out, too. |
my thing was - since the trim items on the car are usually black, do i like the black accents on a white (or other color) car, or do i want to "hide" black trims in black color... well... in 4 bimmers to my name, 3 are black, one is grey... black one are a b!tch to keep clean... grey - is a blessing... lol...

I've got Black Sapphire, and I like it. It is a pain to keep clean, but around here, any color is a pain to keep clean when they put so much salt on the roads. My pearl white Audi wasn't as hard to keep looking clean, but I never drove it down here in the salt. I always prefer "special" colours, and Black Sapphire has just enough metal flake in it to keep me from getting bored.

Thanks for replies, please keep them coming!
I guess another data point I'd like to learn more about - which color gets "dirty" sooner after a wash - under regular weather, let's NOT count snow/post-snow days, as all bets are off during those times. Thinking spring, summer, autumn... |
Is Jet Black offered anymore? I've had two Cosmos Black M3s and two Sapphire Black Metallic X5s. I think a non-metallic paint would be a nice change up, if this were me.
However, my current X5 is SBM and it's "ok." Honestly, I don't love the paint selections offered from BMW, so I just go with black. Titanium Silver is decent, but fairly common where I am, and once it's dirty, it loses any bit of shine. When freshly waxed and polished though, TS is nice. How about Space Grey? |

Space Grey was my very first X5 - 2008' 4.8. I want something different. |

I love my alpine white. Surprisingly, it hides dirt pretty well-- as well as swirls.
You rarely see a white X5 with the 214s... Everytime I see one, I do a double take. So in that case, I say WHITE! |
Well if you can find Alpine White with black interior I think that is the best looking x5. You can really get that "storm trooper " look going that is sporty but classy.
I also think the aero kit looks best on Alpine Whie cars. I could never find a white one optioned the way I wanted it so I went with Space Grey, and don't regret it, but I am partial to the look of a Well modded white car. |
Thanks guys - "classy" is the word I was looking for! My car will be custom ordered, so I don't need to worry about looking for one on dealer lots!
Interesting thought about aero kit... I seen many pics with it, I'll think about that! |
If you are worried about how quickly a car gets dirty then you shouldn't even be looking at a black. I've always gotten Jet Black (in my '01 X5 and now) it has the more "pop" vs. Sapphire (which looks more "milky" in appearance). I would never run my car or any $70K car through an auto wash no matter what color--I always hand wash (I realize not all can do that due to climate). My $.02.

Here in North East hand washing is limited to 7-8 months a year, so I need to be realistic about that. I used to hand wash way more frequently, now with kids taking more time, that has been deprioritized, so car wash every 2 weeks is my way these days.
|
There it is! Aero kit, with alpine white. Tastefully modified, classy and clean.
Over modded cars suck in my opinion. And Alex, it seems like you agree. White with black interior, or even consider the tobacco color... Both are winners. I would never get the tan interior... Yuck. |
Thanks Nazario! The interior options are limited to black or beige, given I am getting perforated seats as part of the luxury seating/ventilated set. So black on the inside, with aluminum trim.

Sapphire black on dove white here. 3 months old. It gets a bath once a week but mind boggling on how to keep wht leather from staining. Love every minute of it.

My last X5 was Black Sapphire, but I decided to with AW this time. It gets very hot in the summer where I live, and I can say that it's true that the white car stays cooler in direct sun. I have the rare Tobacco interior, which looks very nice over the white paint. It's a nice alternative to black, but the black interior cars I looked at were all nice too. I only miss the black because it looked a lot more badass with shadowline trim.
On the other hand, my wife is on her 2nd Black Sapphire 5 series. I don't think she will ever own another color, and it REALLY looks killer when it's clean. Of course that's the other problem with black... IMHO, owning both, I think the black is harder to keep clean . I hope this helps. Either choice is a winner on this body style, if you ask me. |
Alpine white with new Aero kit looks great! Depending on how brave you are you can add the side "skirts" as well (though I'm not sure they work with running boards).
Someone on here has that exact truck (5.0) ...used to have a black one..great photo's of it...best looking X I've seen in a while (IMO). Swirls are there in white, but very hard to see. If you use an automated wash and want it to stay "fresh" looking white will hid a lot more of the swirls than BSM, but will show where the car wash misses (as does almost all colors) and doesn't have the same "pop" that a black or BSM car does. Three white cars in my household right now...before kids my cars were all black, then a bad MB in black turned me off to the color...went with a few silver ones and they were by far and away the easiest vehicles to deal with....but my wife wanted white..happy wife = happy me! |
I have a BSM X5d and love it. Having said that, I will get AW with an aerokit for my next one only because I'm lovin' the AW with tint look :)
When the BSM has a mirror shine, it looks awesome. I agree its a b*tch to keep clean and it shows swirls, but that's what the car detailers are for :) I've never owned a black car and wanted the "bad a$$ but classy" look (BSM with tint) - its a fun look to carry around. IMO - Not sure if you've never had a black X5 before but it might be fun to try especially since you will be giving it back in a few years. Either way, ya can't go wrong. |
unless you do something special to it, the black is too pedestrian. AW, no question. With tint. :D
|
Thanks rh71, I was waiting for you to chime in ;)
This must be NY slang, what does it mean "too pedestrian" mean in reference to color ? ;) |

oh and here: Urban Dictionary: pedestrian ;) |
I have a Black Sapphire Metallic X5 and love it--especially when its clean.
I would not recommend running boards on any X5--your spouse will hate them! Good luck! |

If it matters my x5M is alpine white over black with aluminum trim. Looks great and the alpine white/black is very easy to keep clean. My 535i is black and while the B.S. is much better than jet black I could not bear the thought of keeping a black x5 looking good. Besides, if you go M sport the alpine white really pops whereas the black looks kind of dull on M sport IMHO. If you are going sport activity with running boards and y spoke 20's I think the black looks sharper than the white. Does this help? :dunno: I see you are getting the x535d so you are going with sport activity and y spoke 20's. I think black looks really good on with the sport activity, but it will be a pain to keep it clean and looking sharp. The only thing I do not like about alpine white with sport activity is the black trim contrast with the white paint. |

I totally see your point how black trim spoils the white paint, but since it will be a lease, I dont feel like spending money repainting the trim. And yes, I will be getting it fully loaded with sports, 20" wheels and AD, and so far I am 60% toward SB... |

P.S. If the new 2014+ X5s will not come with running boards, it will be a dissapointment! |
Alpine White - easy to keep clean and will not show scratches, swirls, etc. as easy as the darker colors.
Forget the running boards - had them on my '07 and didn't like them. My '13 does not have them. You can always add on later if you feel as though you need them. |
