After searching low and high to no avail I decided to make the wheel arch and lower rocker shields myself? What do you all think?

Provide some feed back, I just might decide to produce these and provide them to all.

95wildtt 04-08-2013 06:52 AM

What's it made from?

In clear film, yes, but black doesn't seem look that good to me.

doni01 04-08-2013 08:52 AM

I am sorry but Black in a White defeats the purpose. The idea is to have it all one color. Just my 0.02

I think the truck is too white and love the break up. Check out what a mid to late 80's white 911 Porsche looks like. It's tight IMO.

It's made of a thick textured vinyl.

Is this the 3M Di Noc CF Film?
I kinda like it, but I don't have the painted trim?

jeremym 04-08-2013 07:37 PM

Eh.

1naztyx5 04-08-2013 10:26 PM

as long as you like it i guess, but it looks weird (the 911 reference would be the last thing to come to mind) not to mention that is kinda small, the protection film i have seen installed by the dealer also covers a portion of the door.

The stealer already got me for almost 70 grand so I'm not about to drop another 350 for something I could do my self.

While I am not disputing what you're saying...wouldn't that $350 be a nice "insurance" policy on said $70k vehicle? $350:$70,000 is a drop in the bucket. This is like people buying replica wheels for 1/5 the price of BMW wheels just to save...but then when they hit a pot hole and a wheel splits in half, they regret not buying the BMW wheels.

ajp340 04-09-2013 06:43 PM

Lol I knew I would take some heat for the $350 comment. While you are right on all fronts I still like the break up that the black provides and it is removable. I made these because I just purchased new Oem 299's

Hey, like I said, I totally understand. It's a love-hate thing. I love the vehicle, but hate the price tag that I have to pay on top of my already tens-of-thousands of dollars spent. I hear you on that, I really do.

However, not doing something "right" is not my thing. For something like paint protection, I take that very seriously, because paint work on these vehicles comes at just an absurdly high cost.

If you notice the 911 had other black trim pieces that tied it all together. On the all white M Sport the black rock chip protector sticks out, well, kinda like a sore thumb. It would look much better on an Alpine White X5 with Sports Package - that way all of the other black trim pieces would fit together as though they were meant to be together - just like they do on the 911.

IMO those flares look ludicrously 'stuck on'... hideous.

But no opinion on the protector!

:)

Flares? You mean wheel arches? Those are OEM.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused about ard's comment as well. Perhaps he's referring to the minor gap between the flare and the door? Are they OE, meaning from the factory? Or did you install them yourself?

ajp340 04-10-2013 02:48 PM

It's a factory 50i m spt pkg

I know they are OE. Look at the Porsche- sculpted with the body, integrated, sexy...now look at the X5- angular, screwed on... you have the plane of the body, and then a part line and the flare angles out at 45degrees from the body....that's what I mean.

Im not talking about the OPs specific example, just to be clear.

So you're just an extended X5 flare hater? I see now. :D

stypeshaun 04-10-2013 08:23 PM

ajp340 04-11-2013 06:34 PM

Sylvan Lake V35 04-30-2013 09:22 PM

I think it looks poor :dunno:

ajp340 04-25-2014 03:55 PM

bump

rh71 04-25-2014 05:19 PM

Doesn't look good on a white. Produce a clear instead.

DeanLinAZ 04-26-2014 11:28 AM

My 1995 993 had clear vinyl (3M I think) on the front and rear wheel areas. My black X5 (with M-Sport package) has clear vinyl (3M for sure) in those locations. You can't see it unless you look closely. Much better than black on a white car unless you think that has bling.;)
