loose wire in the power supply wiring... this is E70, i am not familiar with the system, so somebody more knowledgable will have to chime in - can you correlate the shutting down with a something, like a bump on the road or a rattle of the car?

Hi Terminator,

Thanks for the reply!

Nope, cant really decide if its a bump in the road, the wife was using it today and said it was going off and on for her whole journey!
I got in the car tonight, removed the Sat Nav CD, and the system was ok, but only had the car running for 15mins or so, took it for a drive and it was ok. Will try it for the next couple of days!

The other problem we have had with it, if cleaning out car etc and leave doors open for longer than say 10 mins it appears to drain the battery and clock resets and -increase battery discharge- comes up on display!
I reckon the battery is on the way out, think i will change this in the next week or so, but waiting on my Bavaria BMW software coming through, so i can program / setup myself!!

cheers

Baz

if the battery is of questionable quality, first replace the battery, and see if the problem is still there - defective or old batteries will introduce a lot of gremlins...

Also, if the battery is old, or going bad, that would easliy account for what you are describing with all of the symptoms. Low Voltage makes all kinds of issues randomly appear, and from your description I'll bet you a pint that is your problem.

Cheers.

Yup, sometimes by accident and sometimes by design. The system is programmed to start shutting-off non-essential electrical drains if it senses voltage is getting very low, e.g., it will disable the seat heaters. While I doubt that it is purposely shutting down the display for this purpose, I can tell you that when my battery was going bad, odd things started happening, like the HVAC fan not working for two days, the display coming-up solid red, etc.

yeah look for the battery diy thread since you're also programming yourself.

+4 on the battery. Start shopping now, it can take a while to source the right one if you are seeking to avoid the dealer raping....
