Windshield replacement
 

I am going to have my windshield replaced on Monday by American mobile glass, they are replacing it with http://www.amgglass.com/wp-content/u...ngton_logo.jpg, I read that it is the OEM glass that BMW uses, but it will be the first time using this company, any one used them before?

pilkington is one of the suppliers... why not go for the pilkington with BMW logo? insurance should pay for the either...

Good luck with that. Odds are about 0 they will give you a BMW OE glass. IMO.

In fact if you say "I want OEM BMW" they may well install a Pilkington, and then say- should you wonder where the BMW logo is after the fact- "Oh, this is OEM BMW since Pilkington is the OEM supplier (maybe?) and therefore this is OEM BMW....so whats your problem?"

I will only use OE glass AND OE INSTALL METHODS.

Most folks have no idea at all as to how this is done- they assume that the guy coming to do the glass will (of course) use BMW procedures..... But generally they whack out the old and glue in a new one, hold it in place, and owners drive off.


I only use a shop that has the procedures and orders the entire install kit from BMW.

And how do I get insurance to cover it? Simple: The mobile installers, safelite, etc, cannot tell you that the car's safety certification will not be impacted by the replacement. Unless they follow BMW procedures, they cannot give you a written assurance- because it has never been validated/certified. ( And while the glue they use may pass certain tests, that isnt all of it!)

when you have BMW body shop install the glass, they actually may subcontract it to the same company that you are dealing with - the difference is, in this case, a BMW stands behind its work, and not some other "no-name" shop, even if a technician from "no-0name" shop did the work...

and most insurances will cover OE glass, assuming, that you are going through the insurance... if, it is out of pocket... well... still, don't go cheap, when BMW sells you a glass, a lot of times the new glass has more connectors than the original had, as the new galss is an updated part, and the approved installers know what to do with them... on the other hand, if you get an older part for your newer car (they may have the same part number), you might be short on a connector or two...

not, that this will happen, but there is always a possibility... also, on a resale - when i am buying a car, i look at the OE logo on the glass - absence of logo would alert me to a possible collision, possible theft...

The Safelite that I've used in the past will use OEM glass ordered from the dealer if you request it, so it is possible. They did it on my Audi Q5 and Vette in the past.

I have had two windshields replaced by my dealer- both as insurance jobs. Both were done in the regular mechanical shop, not the body shop, and both were left overnight to guarantee the adhesives actually set before driving.

If you want a good job it takes time. The glass manufacturer is the least important part- the installation is key.

But they do NOT use factory methods, glue or install kits...Safelite uses their own thick glop to hold and glue the glass in place- MUCH faster, which is why they are low bidder and the direct glass installer for most insurers....




Remember, Pilkington is OEM- they make the OE BMW glass:

OE=BMW
OEM=Whomever made the OE glass
Aftermarket=equivalent fit but not by OEM
