2007 x5 4.8l rough/jumpy idle

2007 x5 4.8l 120k- joined the forum to see if anyone had this issue, did the search on the internet but found info on older gen x5 models.... so i have a rough/jumpy idle after startup warm or cold and sometimes out of no were it will idle bad then run fine. for the past year it allways idle jumpy sometimes but now its worse and threw a check engine light, i need to get it scanned still but in the mean time would like to ask here. i changed the plugs out and clean the mass air flow sensor no change, also when i unplug the mass air flow there is still no change. the fuel filter has been changed in its lifetime before but not sure when since this is my buddys car. any info would be great.

Really? You have a CEL and havent pulled the code, yet want us yahoos to throw out speculation on what you should do?!!?! Besides wasting both our time, wouldnt this possible lead YOU in the wrong direction?

There are 100 things it could be. A code would be a GREAT way to narrow it down. A cam/crank sensor that is starting to fail might be the culprit. or an air leak..or idle air control..or....

but get a code. better yet hook it up to a computer and look at how the engine is running- fuel trims, timing, advance, etc- at idle and part throttle...it will tell you how the DME is responding to changing airflows.

Bad news is that there arent as many DIYers for the E70...yet...but it will come.

Report back-

I know that i need to pull a code to get a better idea but in the mean time it does not hurt to ask since i have a scan tool on the way in the mail since i have some mercedes with srs light on and codes that need to be taking care of first and the bmw is not top on the list since it will be sold soon , so i just started with the simple things in the mean time like check plugs and clean sensors that i would clean as a tune up. also i dont think they used idle air control valves in the e70 4.8l i could not find it and read somewhere that they did not use them in the 4.8l since that was the first thing i went to look for.
