IDrive issues

Can anyone help me out please?
My IDrive monitor occasionally goes blank, shutting down the stereo, sat nav etc.
It's as if the system is rebooting or searching.
It does this on a daily basis, for no reason at all.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?
BMW dealer wants me to pay £150 just to give it a diagnostic check

To start, I'm guessing you have an '07 or '08 model judging by your join date. Perhaps it's a bad dvd drive. If it were just a blank or VERY dark screen but it still works (you can see with a flashlight) like my problem was, then you can just get the screen replaced. Search the forum for bad drive and see if the symptoms are the same.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I have a 2007, the screen goes blank and the cd player goes off and then after a while, the screen shows BMW and everything comes back on. Would a bad DVD Drive cause the system to switch off and restart or reboot?

+1

Although it takes out his audio, which the bad display would not- correct?

OP- try taking out the nav disk and see if that has any impact. You may have a bad nav/disk unit.

Yeh, 1st post.
I've always owned BMW's and any issues I've had in the past, I could usually rectify by searching through the "How To's" section for solutions.
I've also been searching the web to see if this has happened to anyone else, but to no success.

i asked a specific question.....

Thanks ard, it works perfectly when I remove the Nav Disc.
Now I need to source a replacement drive or find out if it can be repaired.
Cheers

Are you sure it is the drive?

What kind of disc are you using?

IMO the issue is that the thing gets read errors (bad disc or bad lens/optics on laser pic up) and these errors overwhelm the drive and lead to a reboot.

If it is a copy disc, get an OE disc. Next try and open it and clean the optical pick up. Then buy a drive.

If it's a bad disc the idrive screen will say it can't read it which has happened with burned discs. I've never had it reboot on me randomly despite that.
