Help!

1 Attachment(s)
So I was driving home from work a couple days ago and these two error messages came up and car went into limp mode. Pulled over and restarted car and errors went away. Came up again the day after so I took it to the dealer to diagnose. They said it was because of a leaking vacuum pump. Before paying $1500+ for repairs does this sound right to you guys? I did some research and it could possibly be a throttle body harness/transfer case issue.

It's a 2008 e70 X5 4.8i btw.

Thanks everyone.

DID YOU PUT "dealer to provide all error codes in writing on the Work ORder"???????

Without error codes there is absolutely no way anyone can give you anything more than a guess.

I always assume dealers are 50 to 200% more than an indy, and 80% more than DIY

How is your battery? How did they DEFINITIVELY diagnose the pump? or is it one code, and they are saying 'must be this based on the codes".

Be aware that a transient code due to low voltage or other glitches can trigger spurious errors- a GOOD tech will read codes, reset, see which ones come back OR run test plans to get a definitive diagnostic. There have been a few stories of dealers chasing ghosts to the tune of $$thousands with the 'read codes and throw parts' approach.

FYI

Same issue on my car. Same car. In my case it was the throttle body itself.
Error codes were all over the place. I've learned that BMW codes are not as clear as VW/Audi.

There's a BMW recall on the brake vacuum pump for 2007-2010 4.8i models.

Is your issue the brake vacuum pump or another pump?

I did ask for the codes from the service advisor I was dealing with. He said I needed to pay $200 for the codes..

It's the brake vacuum pump according to them. I found out about that recall but the service advisor said the issue has been taken care of. If it wasn't, the mechanic couldn't do anything to the car until the recall was taken care of.

Don't worry, I'm still alive. The car hasn't eaten me yet.

We were getting concerned...about ready to send a search party.

Back to the issue.

So you didnt have it in writing, correct? If it was in writing on the RO (repair order) the SA types up, you can refuse to pay a penny- and perhaps refuse to accept the car, as they had not completed the terms of the contract.

SA sounds like a dick actually.

Maybe a chat with the Service Manager? "My car is showing the exact failure that has led to a recall- why would you not contact BMWNA to see if they would goodwill this? Or verify the accuracy of the recall notice/VIN numbers?"

Do you have proof the recall was performed? Any chance this failure was caused by the items involved with the recall? Maybe they did the recall, but the damage to other parts was already started?

Is the car running now?

I'd escalate the issue- do a search for more info about their braking problems, but you want to get this in front of someone from BMWNA to make a decision- not dicks at the local dealer.

And also consider finding an indy

did you fix it?
