Won't shift out of Park?!?
Just over the weekend, my 2010 didn't want to shift out of Park for some odd reason. I started it up in the parking lot after making a quick stop in the store, released the parking break, and tried to shift into Drive. Nothing happens! No error screen on the idrive, no CEL, nothing. After a minute or 2 of trying to shift it into reverse, neutral, or drive, I just turned it off. Then turned it back on and presto...shifted like nothing was wrong.
Anyone with this problem? Is this a precursor to a failing component or just a freak incident? |
Was the door open??

I don't have a break and brake pedal in mine, is that a Euro option? ;)

This has happened to me a handful of times (maybe 5) in the 5 years I've had it. First time was 1-2 years in so it's not really a sign of something "starting to fail". Each time it's fine after re-starting. Think it's just an electronic glitch.
If it were because the door is ajar, it would still shift to D, then shift you back to P when you start rolling and put up a message. |

I haven't had the issue since then. I'm assuming it was a "glitch". I have the soft close feature so its either totally open or totally closed.

We have had very cold temps and snow in Chicago. I had some snow built up in the door jamb but didn't realize it was enough to actually cause this issue because the door would close and no "Drivers door open" error was displayed. I put the car in D/R and it would immediately jump to park when I took my foot off the brake. I had to drag the brake to get the car going. Once moving, all was good.... It was not until I got home and cleaned out the jamb, issue solved.
