Low coolant

I noticed that coolant had overflowed out of the top of the expansion tank. The cap was on but maybe not turned all the way to the "click".

Is it normal for this to happen or should I be worried? The coolant level is below the 'minimum' point, not sure how much. No warning yet. Can I add some distilled water or do I have to go to my dealer to get BMW coolant?

This Beemer noob thanks you for any info and wishes all a happy and safe holiday season.

You need to add BMW Coolant and Distilled Water Mix.

If you are sure that the cap was non on then you are good, in other case you may be developing a leak under the intake runners.

Check for cracks in the coolant reservoir.
Last week mine cracked about 2 inches from the bottom on the side of the reservoir.

Filled it up with coolant/distilled water mix. Took about 12 ozs.
I hope this is a normal replenishment.

Start paying attention next time you see a low coolant level and such.
This will indicate you have issues.
Now, if it takes a while, then you still have issues but you have more time to get to them and get them sorted out (if that makes sense).

I had to replace the seal around my coolant level sensor last summer which meant replacing the sensor itself. Fluid was leaking out.

I refilled with about 20 oz. twice in two months. I could see blueish residue from coolant underneath tank. took it in and they found crack in expansion tank/reservior (warranty)

just noticed a coolant leak on my X5 3.0si this morning.. it was coming from the base of the expansion tank, the one corner where the hose plugs in, i'm hoping it's the sensor you mentioned above..

anyone have a DIY for expansion tank?
