I do believe it was some sort of stepper motor.

Ok thanks, looks like I will have to put it into the dealer to solve this one

I just got an X5 that also has a similar problem.

It will switch to the dash only when the AC is on.

If I push the "Max" button it will go back and work but it seems to switch back and forth to dash when not in "Max" mode.

I did change the idrive settings but it still seems to do it.

Assuming that you got this fixed given that it is a really old post do you remember what it was?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi Rich,

Sent mine into a BMW specialist.

Wiring harness runs down LH side of the car behind front wheel arch, lower sill.

This had worn through the wires, I assume it had not been put back in place properly by dealer changing fuel filter.

Wiring repair done, all fixed

Kind Regards

Haydn

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses.

I will check for those issues and be sure to post back what I find...

I have come across this issue before on my 2012 and 2013 E70. If you have a high discharge on your battery, the blower fan which runs the air in the car will not blow above a very slight amount. The blower motor does draw a fair amount of power so BMW has programed this functionality to prevent Over discharge of the battery. You may ask why does the "defrost" or windscreen blower works at max speed. Well that is due to a safety. If a person needs to use the windscreen fan/defroster, it may be because the individual is loosing visibility and BMW does not want to prevent a greater safety issue by preventing the clearing of the windscreen. How did I find this out, my 2011 was a BMW buyback because of major electrical issues(63 days in the shop). Through this process and the fact the SA is my friend, I was given access to information most people don't get. I had many conversations with the PUMA technician which was brought in because of the PUMA case. Actually he was a very high up PUMA tech because the first one working on the case could not solve the issue.

To back this up, it is -10 degrees F here and when it is this cold, the fan is on high, seat heaters on, Heated steering wheel on, and rear defrost is on. This absolutely drains the battery especially on a short trips, The X5 will NOT charge the battery due to the efficiency Dynamics BS. After 3-4 trips like this, I can assure you that I will get a "High Battery Discharge" When that happens, the blower will not work other than for the windscreen. If I put the car on the charger, bring it up past the point to where the "high discharge" alert is not present, the blower fan works exactly how it is supposed to.

Sorry for the long winded answer but I just wanted to be clear how I came across this and hopefully back it up with some facts. Good luck

Sorry to resurrect this very old thread. I was searching for answers and I found your post which I think makes a lot of sense and very much related to what I'm experiencing now.

My E70 just came out of the shop after 2 years (since start of the pandemic - no available parts and mechanic) having the same problem now. Very minimal air coming out from all the vents in front. BUT when you push the no.1 button on the left center, the one with the 3 wiggly lines - I think this is the front defrost button, blower starts blasting out hot air from the front vents then gradually... air flow moves to the windshield vents and disappears from the front vents. Hence I know my blower motor is not cooked. I also changed the FSR resistor already and changed the ac control module with no luck. I'm charging the battery now to see if this solves the problem. Maybe because the X got stuck in the shop for almost 2 years hence the discharge...?

Note that iDrive vent settings are correct. Will update again tomorrow when battery is fully charged. Hope to hear some more of your thoughts on this. Thanks!

PROBLEM SOLVED! So this morning woke up and rushed to my garage with a FULLY charged battery. Immediately turned on the AC... and voila! I have a hurricane like air flow coming out of the front vents! I'm guessing the mechanics in the shop were just charging the battery just enough to get the motor started and that was not sufficient to power the AC to its normal capacity. Thanks again MV99 for your very insightful inputs here!

Now on to the next issue :) why my battery is discharging :( and having this increased battery discharge error! You can't win them all! haha. TY!

Just as a final followup to this thread incase anyone else has the issue...

My issue is now solved. It appears to have been a bad IHKA unit.

I purchased one with the same options as my e70 and then had to code the VIN and default code the module for my VO. Note that before coding the unit would not run the AC compressor so it must be coded before it will work.

Before I replaced it I would get strange behavior like the fans trying to blow out the windshield vents when set to max AC. I had replaced stepper motors, replaced the coolant valve, etc and nothing fixed it until I swapped and coded a used IHKA (which was only $50 shipped from ebay).

Now my CCC e70 has almost reasonable AC. I still think the stratified air control in CCC is silly and keep it in the neutral setting so I don't have to go through the selection and settings in the CCC to change it but now it isn't the thing I dislike most about the X5 anymore. :)
