Have you tried disconnecting MAF and then starting the car (with it disconnected)?

no. can it cause crank not starting if it's bad? I thought if it's bad, car will run rough but still start.

should I just unplug the wire to test it?

when the engine is cold the maf reading is not taken into an account. I understand that if the unit is shorted it will prohibit car from running.
long story short no maf and no high side o2 sensors and car will run in limp mode.

I thought it would be something simple - either relay or fuse. Checked both and they were good. Then I removed backseat and tested the pump with 12V. Pump ran fine.

Any advise from this point? Car is 08' 4.8i

I'm thinking to loan autozone obd2 tool to pull codes. Anyone knows if their obd2 reader works for 08' X5? Don't know if there is any code.

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead but I'm on the same page , the intank fuel pump on my 08 is recalled will this be the solution? I plan to tow it to BMW dealer but want to know that's forsure before they try and charge me diag fee

It could be the problem but none of us can say for 100% certain that it is the situation with your X5. As mentioned in the post, a test of the MAF is simple, unplug it and start the car. If bad MAF it should start and run without issue. There is a system default that will kick in when you disconnect the MAF.
