Question about Vermillion Red on 2012 X5
 

Hi! I am new to the board and to BMW's in general... I am looking at purchasing a used 2012 X5 in the next month. I test drove a 2012 X5 and absolutely loved it. It was grey and didn't have all the options that I really wanted so the dealership is looking for one for me. I was asked what colors I preferred and I told them the blue and the red. I have seen a blue one but not a red. I am hoping it will be a red that I will like... Those of you that have one or have seen them, can you tell me if it is a dark red or more of a orangey red? Thanks for any information! I am excited about possibly getting my first BMW :)

We have a vermillion red X1 in the family. It is not an orange red. It is also not a vibrant red. I really like it. There aren't many around. Do a google image search on vermillion red, or review this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...add-yours.html

Thanks JCL! I did look at that thread already and some other pics which is what prompted me to ask because depending on the light some looked to almost have an orangey tint to it. I am not a big orange fan ... Lol

1. why not find a vermillion to look at?

2. Having the dealer find a car for you is ABSOLUTELY the best way to maximize the price. dealers dont generally swap cars for free

Ard- there are not any close by that are for sale to look at and I haven't seen any driving around. As far as maximizing the price... I told them what I am willing to spend period, if they can find it for that price fine, if they can't- I won't buy one. But I am open to suggestions if you think there is a better way to go? They do have one on the lot that I test drove that I could get a good deal on but it has more miles than I had wanted.

You told the dealer your price.... So there are a few possible

1. Dealer looks, finds a vermillion but the dealer that has it wants too much and your dealer cannot add $4000 profit, so they say "we couldnt find anything"

2. Dealer looks, finds one, adds $4000, and calls you and says "We can get one, it is a bit more than you want to pay"..and the grinding begins. Importantly the selling dealer now knows there is a buyer in play for the vermillion.

3. Dealer looks, finds one, adds 4k and you are OK with the price

In both 1 -3 , had you found the vermillion you would be 4k under where you are with your local dealer.


Folks need to understand what motivates used car dealers... they are opportunistic, money grabbing, dishonest and lazy. A trailer on a lot on the corner, or inside the BMW building wearing nice clothes- you can find the same motivations. DO NOT think that becuase it is a BMW dealer it is any different.

There could be $40K difference between base 35i and loaded 50i.

We're not talking about engines at all. We are discussing colour, and in a follow-on note, whether it is better to let a dealer find the perfect colour vehicle and pay a premium, whatever that premium might be, or whether it is better to do your own search.

My take is that colour isn't all that important. If one wants to improve the odds of finding a good vehicle, at a reasonable price, one should have a list of acceptable colours and options. The longer the list, the more vehicles you will have to choose from. The best way to get a deal on a used vehicle is to let it find you, rather than you searching for it. In the latter case, you risk narrowing your alternatives down to the point where you are almost guaranteed to pay more.

Seattle-As far as engines- I was talking about the 35i- not ready for the 50i yet (pricewise anyways-although it would be fun)
ard- I did give a list of colors that I would consider along with particular years and options but told them that I was most interested in the vermillion and the deep sea blue (I think that is what it was called) They were going to see what was available from BMW financial is what I think that they said that were going to search through.

Here is another question- some of the ones that they were coming up with had 50,000+ miles- should that be a concern that the high miles would become an issue?
