2010 X5d Oil Coolers Leak?
 

I have a 2010 X5d with 50k miles. I noticed under front sides plastic in front of the two wheels, there are some oil spots. It seems like leaks from the two oil coolers. No dripping so far, but worries me... I dont see anywhere else leaking.

Anyone had similiar problem?? please help...:wow:

Had the same thing on my 2011 x5d several months ago. Turned out to be intercooler seal leaking. Replaced under warranty.

Just out of warranty... I see no dripping or anything.. I hope its nothing serious... Is there a DIY to fix this?

How interesting is that picture!!!!! My car too was missing the lip in front on the wheels: I thought someone removed it at some point and forgot to put it back... Now to get back on topic: what oil coolers are you referring to? I'm not aware of any oil cooler in that area... On the driver side there's the auxiliary water cooler and the passenger side should be empty.

The only oil cooler I know of is the power steering one; the transmission oil is temperature controlled through a oil-water heat exchangers. All of these are in the center so if they were to leak I would expect traces of oil elsewhere

If it does indeed come from the intercooler (that too is in the center) I would question what and why oil is in there to begin with...

If I were you I would actually remove the bottom plastic and see where is it coming from.

Another possibility is that is just residual cosmoline (the protective oily stuff they put on the engine during transport) that was not properly washed off.

Zeta i was think its the cooler thing on the driver side in front of front wheel. U will see vents in front of wheel.

Regarding the splash flaps in front of the wheels, im not too sure if we are supposed to have them cuz i know 2011+ have them. I bought mine used.

It could be plastic shine details they put before i bought the car.

Yes, the one on the driver side is actually an auxiliary water cooler: look closely and you'll see that the drive side is a real vent, while the passenger is fake.

Regarding the flaps, mine too was used so I too can't say whether they were removed or never there. The picture of the test from autoblog I posted clearly show them on a 2009 35d.

There is an oil cooler there. Here is what mine looked like after I took out the fender liner to get to the headlight bolts

Its all covered in road crud from the winter :( I cleaned it thoroughly.

That's not an oil cooler: that's an auxiliary water cooler.

^^ I would care to disagree, I definitely had oil coming from the lower line when I disconnected it to get it out of the way. Here are the BMW instructions (without the diagrams)
