2008 BMW 4.8i

Hello,

I am a new member and know very little about the BMW X5.
I am planning to buy a 2008 BMX X5 4.8i at 115000 km. The car is orginally from the US.

What kind of problems that I should I look for in this model? Is the mileage too high for this model?

Thanks
Mike

records... records... records...

inspection... inspection... inspection...

was the car in Sandy's path? was it in accident? was oil changed?

with this mileage you should be looking into regular maitenance items - the suspension parts, the oil leaks, the belts, the hoses... was the car in northern states, subject to road salt? was it southern car? were any of those items replaced?

average US driving habits suggest 12-15 K miles a year, the car is 6 years old, should be between 75K and 90 K - 115 miles show a little bit more than "standard" mileage but nothing to be overly worried about... as a matter of fact, in these engines, high mileage means that the engine is all muscle and no fat (fat = "mayo" sludge in the CCV)

115000 kilometers is about 75000 miles, so...

- you will need new battery soon (my was bad about that mileage)
- possibly new alternator (my died about 85k miles)
- possibly new throttle body (died also at 85k miles)
- definitely alternator bracket gasket, valve cover gasket and timing cover gasket (got it replaced at 100k miles)
- most definitely valley pan, coolant exchange pipe and I would do a water pump then as well (got it replaced at 95k miles)
- finally, you have a tune up coming up: spark plugs, break fluid, filters (did this at 95k miles)

Any one else?

oops - my bad... you did say 115000 kilometers... then, you are on par with the mileage...

Thanks guys for the information.
The car last 7 digit of VIN #: LZ36794
The car is from Colorado only and imported into Canada in 2011.
The price is : 27,000.00 CAD. Is it a fair price?

Mike

Nice options you have here, check the inner tail lights if they leaks or not function. Mechatronic sleeve been replaced? Common leaky problem. Vacuum pump leaks been fixed? Working navigation DVD player?? Suspension airbags any leaks? These are the common problems with E70 4.8i, weak seals, oh yah tilting reverse side mirror, make sure it tilts when reverse, if not it needs new motors. Good luck

The only difference I found between 2007 and 2008 e70 is the traffic update RTTI option. Are there any other diffs that should be considered? I wonder if a 2007 X5 is also a good option, considering that's the first year when e70 came out.
- NHTSA bulletins - more for 2007
- RTTI

Any thoughts?

I am not sure of how BMW handles their 1st year of production but in VW and Audi case I've been successful in avoiding those years, and repairs that came along with that.

Any ones else?

Based on my research before buying my E70 (here, bimmerfest, xbimmers, etc etc)...consensus from the forum members posts made me believe this applies to BMWs as well.

I have exact same car and I visit dealer once a month. Next week will be the passenger side airbag shock deflating while left at airport for 4 days. Last month was power tailgate motor failure. December was fuel pump failure (that sucked! required a tow). November was an oil leak that they said was some sort of vacuum. I don't know if I will keep it past CPO expiration in October but I will say it is by FAR the most fun car to drive I have ever owned. It's a monster.

Suge206 02-18-2014 04:41 PM

I've had a a bad sun roof cartridge, bad fan sensor and a steering angle sensor go out in 1.5 years . all covered by extended after market warranty. I wouldn't own this without an extended. The sunroof repair alone was more than the warranty. I wouldn't call my suv problematic by any stretch but when something does go wrong it aint cheap.

tam_bui 02-18-2014 06:11 PM

Extended warranty

Where do you get a good aftermarket warranty for the X5?

Suge206 02-18-2014 06:35 PM

they offered it at the dealer I bought at. I cant remember the name of my current provider. its on file at BMW service and they deal directly with them when I have a claim. I had one through Zurich on my previous touraeg and it was solid as well.

jharms 05-18-2014 05:23 PM

Don't do it, unless you have a back up car for when the X5 is in the shop and LOTS of money for repairs. Oh, and be sure to put paper on the garage floor for the oil leaks.

Pierce330 05-18-2014 07:32 PM

That price is what Xs are going for in Ontario (4.8) with sport package...but Canadian vehicles...I would recommend keep looking...and listen to the people on here...a wealth of knowledge...
