2009 E70 X5 35D Fuel economy
 

Hello friends, Just bought 35D last month and i am not getting good fuel ecomy as they say on the books.It has 76000 kms (48000 miles) on it and i drive always watching my mpg dial and always watch my foot.I drive 50-50 hwy and city with normal traffic.The best i am getting is 11.2 litres/100 km (21 MPG).It has a CPO warrany and brand new bridgestone RFT tires and has a 3rd row but not a sports package..

Is it normal fuel consumption or i should take it to the dealer.Please advice me.Thanks

My wife gets about 10.2-10.3 in our 2010 (140,000km) so I would say your fine, its all in the foot.

I get around 21.5 mpg mixed with my '12 X5D.Relatively carefull driving and 71-73 mph freeway speeds.This beast weights ~6000 lbs,so no good results are expected in stop and go traffic.

Better not weight 6000lbs or my GVWR is out the window, book is like 5200lbs.

That is the max weight the car can be not the curb weight, the weight is about 5200. So ya I am right ;)

The GVWR is 62?? in the picture so if the car weighed 6000 you could not drive with a full tank and a passenger LOL

I am not going to argue,but that is why I mentioned ~6000 lbs,which is very close to the real number.If it is 5200 dry weight(or curb weight),5700-6000 are what it has daily driving with some stuff 3/4 tank and a spare tire if you have one(this is around 75-90 lbs) depending on the model.However, a few hundred pounds doesnt change the fact that it is a pig,almost 1000 lbs heavier than well equipped E53.And it is very hard to hide it,with a regular or sport suspension that is.

I love my e70 diesel but the mileage is not great. It is very bulky and I can't believe how fast we're going through brakes and tires.

Personally I am waiting for the X3 diesel here.... Ofcourse it is available in Europe. Why BMWNA is incapable of making it available here beats me.

Just for an FYI for those who do not know.

GVWR is the max weight, nothing to do with what the car weighs.
GCWR is the max combined, so when towing a trailer.
GAWR is the max load of the front/rear axle, important for hauling cargo and for tongue weight.

From the numbers I can find the E53 and E70 are the same weight....


I have not had a chance to really drive it and were on studded tires right now but it does not seem "bulky", our brakes are only 1 month old so can't comment on that but tires are not wearing at all so far.

I recall from when the E70 came out that it was up to 500 lbs heavier than the E53, depending on options.

While GVWR and GAWR are legally defined numbers, based on the manufacturer's rating, the concept of GCWR is less clear. It is a commercial vehicle term, not a passenger vehicle term, in many cases. Some jurisdictions don't define it at all. I would agree that it is generally GVWR of the tow vehicle, plus a trailer figure, but the trailer figure can be either the GVWR of the trailer, or an arbitrary number that the tow vehicle manufacturer specifies as a tow limit. That last one is the confusing one, since there are not standards for measuring it that are in common use (but SAE is getting there now, it is just that vehicle manufacturers aren't using the SAE standard)
