Need a scanner ODB2?
 

I am sorry if this has been discussed and is an overused thread. I did some searching and did not see much here.
I have a 2009 X5 3.0 and have a CEL and would like to get an idea of what is going on. Had the gas cap error on the dash and the CEL came on later.
I would like to spend under $200 but do not want to get something that is not very useful.
Does anyone have some suggestions?

Cheapest easiest tool is BMW Scanner 1.40 under 40 on eBay.

If you have a Harbor Freight store near by you can get them for around $55 using a 25% off coupon.

And only be able to see generic codes and not really do anything with them.

This will do almost everything.

Just returned a D+CAN cable and software to a seller on Ebay. E70 BMW's apparently need an ICOM cable for diagnostics. I have the OBD2 pictures below and did NOT work on my new E70. It worked fine on my Aston, Porsche, M3... not the 2011 X5.

I want to thank everyone for their time and patience. Would the OBDII reader from German auto recycler work? Here is the link, this looks like something I could use for years to come.

Looks like for e70 you need BMW scanner 2.1.

It is less than that scanner you are showing, of course you need a laptop to use it.

I can say 1.4 works great on my e53.

Will the BMW scanner 1.4.0 from the eBay link work with a Mac as I no longer has windows laptops around
