Wheel and tire question

2 questions: need opinion of whether 2k is worth it for wheel and tire insurance for my 20" M style staggered with run flat. The other question is do I dare out all season tires on these wheels and make a wild hope that in the northeast winter like this year I'll be ok OR do I just pony up and get a second set in 18"?

no insurance and a second set imo.

Even with NYC roads? Or potholes with some road surface

been fine for years on my all-season Toyos, but I don't go driving in 8" or anything like that of course. The wide tires are already a negative, so don't get too brave. Are you parking on city streets where there are snow piles?

I just don't like swapping out tires twice a year and having to store an extra set. Heavy wheels. In the name of safety you should always do what's optimal but if you're asking if you can probably get by in this area, I'd say yes.

it is/will be our only vehicle for a little bit and i'm not sure we'll have a second one for next season so to answer the question of parking on piles of snow it is possible, not that with 18" i'll have much better luck but at least it wont be painful on the wheels. not really bothered by storing a second set but wanted to get opinions to make sure i wasnt crazy. now the next question is would 18" off a 5 series fit the x5?

you wont bend or damage an 18" wheel because of potholes. there is far too much rubber to do that unless you are doing rockhopping or something. keeping your 20" original wheels and having a designated 18" winter setup will keep your summer wheels in mint shape and give you a softer and smoother ride on the 18" during the winter months.

i decided to keep my stock 20" 214 wheels as winters and installed 275/315 toyo designated winter tires and purchased 22" summer wheels with all seasons.

I have the insurance on the 20" RFTs and have had at least 5 tires replaced with another 1.5 years left of the warranty--so has paid for itself and more (though I paid only $1,200 for mine--I think BMW has raised the price since so many claims). I'm not sure if it covers rim damage from pot holes though--I think (from what I recall) it replaces the rim only as a result of tire failure (not if you just run over a pothole). The 20s are so wide (and softer compound) they pick up nails easily--at least here in Dallas with all of the growth there is construction everywhere so I'm glad I got it.

Thanks guys I think it's a mixed bag but sounding like it's not a total waste to keep insurance and a second set won't hurt.

I dared the all season option, running a Continental DWS Extreme Contact non staggered set, on style 214 Y spoke 20" rims (275/40/20 to be exact).

It seemed to be going fine, until I hit a massive pothole (Toronto is pretty bad these days), and now I'm out of 2 tires (the rims are mostly undamaged, luckily - just some scuffs).

Slapped back my trusty 18" star spoke 210, with Michelin Latitude Alpin winter tires, and realized this was the right way to do it, all along. The handling is better, and the high profile is a much better match for the endless potholes.

beautiful color X and the 22s are a nice design unlike others I've seen. Here's my snow pic with 20s with all seasons. I didn't want to get too brave, but they work fine in semi-plowed snow.
