What size tires can I replace my OEM's with?
I have a 2009 X5 with OEM 255/55 18inch runflat wheels and tires. The runflats I got Michelins, wore out quickly and have a rougher ride. I dont like them. I bought a spare tire kit and put it in the trunk so I can go with a standard (non runflat tire). My only problem is that there isnt a big choice in that original size.
I really like the Michelins LTX's (had them on my '01 X5) but they dont come in that size. Is there another size I can use on my 18" rim that comes close enough to the originals that it wont make much difference? |
TR shows ~68 species of tires in your size...

Bill K, I suggest you look at Conti DWS, an all weather tire. I have them on my E53 in your existing size and am very pleased with them. In MD, you get enough weather in winter months to benefit from their decent ice/snow performance, without really sacrificing much summer performance, so long as you are driving it as an SAV and not like you stole it ... I have had the Mich LTX m/s [and a/ts] on other vehicles [big Ford pickups] and really like them, but find the Conti DWS a fine tire for an X5. I had them in a similar size on a roadster [SLK] and they wore well on that demanding application [staggered, no rotation ....] Smooth, quiet ride for an all-weather, and reasonably priced, too.

I will eventually change my tires as well... mine are 20's on M-sport package. Too much noise. Tire Rack will definitely be my choice yet again :)

No, LTX on Ford Superduties. I don't think their sizes fit E53s [and certainly not the 18" wheels on mine ....]. I have only had the Conti DWS on my current E53 and, earlier, on a benz roadster [SLK] - Where I got a great deal on the DWS and figured I'd need [and did] a little snow/ice capability given where we used it.
