Dreaded DSC, 4X4 lights

Fault codes are 5462 and 5F3A. Any easy way to know if it's the servo/actuator vs. the transfer case itself? (Trying to avoid giving the dealer an early Christmas.) Thanks in advance. |
Did you do the steering wheel trick? Turn the wheel from lock to lock and it may go away...

In fact/also, the fault codes relate to the transfer case and servo. There's a cheap replacement for a worn gear in the servo, which I'm going to try. But if that doesn't work, I just wonder, for strategy purposes, if there's a way to know whether the transfer case is the culprit, just the servo, or both. If it's the servo motor, then it's $800 or thereabouts for the part. And I think I can handle the job myself. But if it's the transfer case itself, then I'm hesitant to fix. Dealer quoted $4200. In short, I don't want to spend $800 on a new servo if the problem is the transfer case. (If the dealer is already going to beat me up, I don't want to be punching myself in the face too.) |
While on bimmerfest you suggest you know about battery related issues, have you checked the battery??...without the basic info on the X it's hard to guess, but I had similar issues but only had 8,000m so it was a bad battery in the end....if you've got 200k on the X then it could be transfer case, if it's an 08 it could be transfer case....need more details otherwise we are all just guessing here....

Sorry, Are you about 70K miles? My Money is on a bad throttle body.
Bunch of transfer case codes, transmission codes and a tb that passed adaptation. Farther troubleshooting reviled one bad spot on the tb motor. Issue fixed now for 30k miles. Update: Problem turned out to be a worn gear inside the transfer case servo/actuator.
$125 part + Saturday morning under the car = no more DSC/AWD lights. Notes at the bimmerfest thread linked above. |
