Engine Malfunction
Hi all, I have 09 4.8 X5 with 82k+ miles. I was getting engine malfunction messages last week. They first replaced the throttle wiring harness. All seemed fine until a week later I get the same message again. This time its the actual throttle valve. Valve replaced and all seemed fine. The car even felt like it pulled off the line better. I'm a bit irritated that I had to pay $50 for the CPO fix.
Anyway, fast forward to today. I'm exiting the highway (25 minutes drive from work) and I get AWD/DSC malfunction message. Dealer will be checking the car tomorrow. I'm getting a bit concerned..should I be looking to trade my vehicle in? Even more annoying is the $50 CPO fee. Maybe they will wave this one because I have been in so many times. Any thoughts on the root cause? Thanks. |
Welcome to the club. I must have said this three times already to others.
Check you Throttle Body (that was the case in my case) By the time you hit a 100k you should expect following to fail: - throttle body - rear air springs, unless already replaced - alternator - valley pan gasket seal or coolant exchange pipe seal (that will require valley pan removal - alternator bracket gasket - valve cover gaskets - timing cover gasket Here was my experiance: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...lfunction.html |

Throttle body was replaced last week. Looks like they are saying it's the wiring harness (cable). Dealer has another X5 in the shop for the same thing. BMW rep was on-site and recommended the repair. They are testing on the other X5 before working on mine.
Looks like I'll have a new BMW loaner ('14 328d w/ M package) for a while. I cannot believe the gas mileage on this new 3 series.;) |
Dealer is waving the deductible. My SA is outstanding! He is going the extra mile to make sure my ride is safe before returning to me.

My X5 is still at the airport... 79k on the clock.
It's been sitting in the parking garage for 3 days. I just put a new alternator, when fixing the valve cover leak which dripped into my alternator, and battery in 2 months ago. It's been running great, but when I started the car within the first second the Engine Malfunction message came on. Turned it off after a couple of minutes and it did the same thing again. I tried to drive it for a couple of blocks and no luck... in limp mode. Since my car is sitting in the airport parking garage, what would be the best method for fixing this? I'm thinking I should try to clean it first to try to get it home, then can look at the TB itself and the harness. I obvously didn't have my laptop/cable to pull codes. Thanks, John |
Just drive it home... A cel is fine to drive withit on...
|
I tried to drive it home last night, the problem is that it woldn't go over 40MPH with the reduced Engine Performance/limp mode, and the drive home is all highway with 65-70MPH speed limits.

This happen to me 3 times. I would recommend taking it to the dealer. I think it's very unsafe losing power. My 09 4.8 is still in the shop. Two weeks and counting as of today. They think it's a wiring harness, per BMW NA recommendations. They replaced the throttle harness and throttle body with no success. I hope to get an update today on vehicle. I'll post once I get the car back.
I have two young kids and I'm not willing to risk their safety. IMO. |

Man... You were hauling a$$!
It started just like normal this morning, but had lots of codes stored. Cleared the codes and all has been fine today Doing the cable harness change out tomorrow... Then she's up for sale. |
^^ Had enough of the issues eh?
|
Yes, too much time and energy spent on fixing or wondering what's next...
|
I agree. New vehicle search begins. I was thinking a 6 cylinder diesel. What do you think?
|
Get a diesel. They always have issues with the v8.
