DIY oil change mistake
 
I recently changed the oil on the 2009 3.0. Everything seemed to go well but I jacked the X5 up on one side and forgot to lower it while draining the oil. I finished and put in six quarts of oil. Started the engine and ran it for 5 minutes and checked the level. The level indicated maximum with one bar left to be lit.
Is this normal? Could one quart have been left inside because of the off level jacking? What should I do?

one bar left to be lit? so, it is not completely to the max?... in this case, i would say, leave it in as it is...

on the other hand, if the thought of having a qt of old oil floating together with new oil bothers you, change it again...

I did oil change myself only once - after that, i would bring my oil, my filter to local Wal-Mart, and have them get dirty and oily for $20 labor... I stand there watching over them, so they do not attempt to vacuum my floors or clean my windows - just oil drain, filter replacement, new oil... well worth $20 - i don't have to worry about the old oil, or spill control or clean up...

Check it in the morning. If it needs a quart, add it. No issue. Old oil mixed with new oil does decrease the potential life of the new oil but I would not worry about it. As long as the level is correct

Thank you for the replies. I like the idea of having someone with a lift to do the job. I will keep a close eye on it. We will change the oil early because of the contamination.

So cheap. It would easily at least cost me 3 times more than what you paid.

$20 only for labor... i bring my oil (I measure it before bringing it to them), my filter... even my sockets and allen wrenches, just in case if they don't have their own (which, they have their own)

Yeah, I meant labour only too......on top of that workshops do not like people bringing their oil and filter here, as they would earn less. Sounds like it is common in us. You guys are lucky.

The worse problem with your DIY is that it sounds like you got under the car with just a jack supporting it. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it as long as you change your oil more frequently than every 10,000 miles.

Yeah, going under a vehicle on a jack is a major no-no.

Even the best floor jacks have nothing more then a rubber piston o-ring holding the fluid pressure.

To get the most old oil out, drive the front wheels on ramps, pull plug, wait 1/2 hr, pour 1 qt new oil in (1/2 in filter housing, 1/2 in oil fill), let sit overnight. The new oil "pushes" the old oil out.

I only do my own oil if the lift is available, otherwise I go to the lubepros down the street.
