2007 X5 - R.I.P. Nav DVD drive

Hi everyone,

Looks like my Nav DVD drive has finally decided to keel over and die. It doesn't matter which nav disc I put in, it won't read any of them. In fact it'll make the whole system hang (just displays BMW) for a long time when turning on, and if it eventually does come up, it'll often reboot and act strange. If I eject the nav disc, system turns on quick, radio plays, everything is normal... minus nav functions of course.

Being as I've tried multiple nav discs and get the same result, I'm convinced the problem is the DVD player itself. I wanted to ask the community if anyone knows where I can order just the DVD player and try to fix this as inexpensively as I can. If anyone has any tips or feedback it would be very appreciated!

FYI - I did search the forum and went through a few pages of results but didn't find what I was looking for. I hope I'm not asking something totally redundant... if so, sorry, please shoot me the thread URL I should be looking at!

Thanks in advance! Hopefully someone has the info I'm looking for!

I would first open it up and try to clean the optical pickup

Earlier incarnations you could replace the drive, and there are some DIYs (ie mark 3,4 units)

Have not seen the new CCC or CIC units, but assume there are people starting to fix these.

You've got nothing to lose, right?

Ard, you can replace just the drive on the CCC, I had mine done under warranty while I still had a CCC in the car.

I'm talking JUST the drive or optics, not the whole assembly. A DVD dirve or optic alone (component) can be $30. The BMW drive is the whole thing at $$$.

Open the box, get out the toshiba (or whomever) DVD drive, replace it.

While I have no experience with CIC, on the old mark IV dvd drives, the box was $2300. There was no dealer level repair, but I recall people figured out the drive assy that was needed to replace the defective optics.

For example:

(and this is one of those "Wow, what an amazing DIY posts")

True, nothing to lose by trying to clean the optic. I can give it a shot but should it not work and I have the drive laying in front of me... I'd just have to look up the model number and buy a replacement then slap it all back together?

I'm well out of warranty so going to the dealer is out of the question with the price tag I'm sure they'd try to charge. I'll keep poking around, cleaning would be great, but replacing the drive would be a great second option, assuming I can locate the drive to purchase.

Thanks!

I had the same issue on my 2007 x5. I bought a new dvd drive from Garry Romani (parts manager @ BMW of New Port) for $96 plus a refundable core charge of $137. It was fairly easy to replace once I got the ccc out of the vehicle.

He offers parts at a fairly significant discount to E60.net members (I have a 5 series as well)

Part number is DVD player 65839273195.

Send him an email @ [email protected]. Ask him for pricing on this part number. Put E60.net in the subject to get the discount.

Good Luck
