Odd noise
Guys so got a 2013 3.5 M sport with just under 7k. Since I bought it haven't driven much but have noticed when ever I do and start it up, the first few seconds there is a metallic rattle like two metal lids hitting. If I start driving away instantly and floor it or apply any gas it kind of get louder and then goes away. A friend of mine with an 08 4.8 had the same issue at about 45k. Any thoughts? I don't feel like taking it in yet but :dunno:

Mine does that on startup, i know with the E53s that was common to have the timing guides deteriorate and break. Dont know bout your though. With mine its some plastic pieces and i think the oil cap i lost (couldnt get it so just bought a replacement at AZ). Impropper lubrication usually causes some of these issues (most OTC oils, especially castrol are not full synthetic and really dont offer as good of protection as some assume) but with 7k miles not too sure. Follow propper break-in procedures and if i were you id get it looked at.

thanks beamertruck, i'll give it a little bit longer to see if more driving will help the lubrication and if it maybe has to do with cold starts (will see how it works in the summer) otherwise will take it in.

wastegate rattle.
"normal" per BMW. They will do nothing. OP- search on that term. You will even find youtube videos so you can compare sounds.... (When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail...when you sell oil, everything is a lubrication issue?) :) |

thanks for the info, seems like this wastegate nonsense is pretty prevalent which raises a question of why the heck aren't they doing something. to have that if that's what it is at just over 7k or just under (dont remember) is pretty sad, the only saviour in this is that it goes away after a few seconds after starting the car. |
OT
Doesn't BMW still pour Castrol as OE factory fill? Vendors are great...but the table banging is becoming annoying, imo. |
somebody's sleeping with the business

The n55 in my 335i has done it since day one. I've been told "normal" three times at two dealerships. I wonder who designed that sound into the engine?
