BMW Recall

Has anybody been contacted to bring your vehicle in for the recall to fix a bolt? I'm worry that mine might stall driving on the highway.

Price 05-08-2014 07:31 AM

Contacted? I imagine most had it done long time ago.

hd2000fxdl 05-08-2014 09:55 AM

MeinX5: nope not yet, even when I put my VIN number in it's not showing as a recall yet.

Price: Didn't this recal just come out last month, something like 4/10/2014??

If we're talking about the drive belt pulley bolt recall on diesels, it's from Nov 2012.

No, it's the bolts that hold the camshaft together. Here is the link from the news.

BMW says another 170,000 vehicles from 2010 through 2012 with inline six-cylinder engines will not be recalled, but will receive an extended warranty due to the problem.
So... "we'll fix it after you stall at 70mph in the left lane of a major highway."

Wait, there's more than one bolt in our cars??...

Had this break on me before the "recall" - dealership quoted me just over $15 000 to fix it. They wouldn't cover it under goodwill. I hope my vin pops up under that recall list soon so I can get it looked at.

"this"...??

You must have more details on the recall than we have...what is the partnumber that needs replacing?

jamilio 05-08-2014 06:32 PM

Its a common problem. There are 4 bolts for the vanos system that sheer off over time. All four of mine broke and damaged the exhaust valves in 3 cylinders. The bolts look like cheap pieces of plastic-metal type compound.

It was a nightmare and to fix because they have to rip apart the cover to find some pieces and fix the damage, then they have to take the oil pan off to find the rest of the pieces. I still have all the symptoms. Engine comes and goes as it pleases. Loss of power. Limited speeds. Won't start-just turns over. If you let it rest for 10 minutes, it will start again. Bla bla bla.

I miss the old bullet proof reliable beemers.

While on the forum where I first saw this there was a few other people that had this problem cast them an out of pocket repair, they also mentioned that contacting BMWNA and while a check wasn't cut right then and there, they are going through the process to get reimbursed. Nobody said they have cash in hand yet being its so soon, but at least there is a chance if you experienced the same failure, you have a chance,,, so be so kind and remember me at Christmas. :D

Good luck and keep us posted on how things go.

Based on the limited description in the posted link and the engine diagram I was thinking it was the vanos housing. In the USA, a mfg is required to reimburse you if you fix an issue that subsequently requires a recall.

Well let's just look at this a little more recall aside. I have the n55 motor and the 8 speed tranny, I know it,s not an M model, but I'd say I have a strong and worthy power train that's going to be good for years, but I am a DIY kind of guy also..

Just dropped my vehicle off at the dealer for a check engine light. Asked about this Vanos bolt recall, as noted earlier, probably too early still.

However, there was a recall noted on my paperwork to check the front driveshaft....I have read some posts where it comes apart while driving and its a complete mess...assuming it's related to that

jiigan 05-14-2014 02:03 PM

Drive shaft recall is happening for sure, I am getting a new one this week from stealership. 2011 e70

What are the symptoms ? Any rattle while cruising involved ?

rdham 05-22-2014 02:41 AM

Xtony 05-22-2014 07:28 AM

The vanos bolt recall affects the n55 engine only if I'm not mistaken.

Just got the letter from BMW NA regarding my vehicle affected by the Vanos bolt recall. Parts not avail yet and will be contacted once they are.

What are your driving?

This page, for example, leaves many questions unanswered:
BMW X5 Recall Information - BMW Recalls and Problems

I noticed on another board that someone with a 35i was going to have his driveshaft inspected. He did not get a letter but when he called about an appointment for something else they told him they would look at the driveshaft.

rdham 06-09-2014 04:01 PM

2011 3.5i base.

Not sure what questions you need answered...that info was the same pretty much in the letter. But assuming you will get a letter if it impacts you and BMW NA has your info.

Front driveshaft(read history in this post), no letter, just brought it in for something else and they noted it needed to be checked.
