X5 Diesel long term
 

Anybody out there with a high mileage E70 3.5D? Our lease is up in a few months and trying to decide if we should keep it and buy from BMW leasing or move on. We really like it but I am leery about long term repair costs. Will still have 1 year of warranty remaining if we buy it. Thanks.

Mine has 90,000 miles on it and its been good so far, I bought it used with about 85,000 miles on it.

I know that the mechanics are pretty bulletproof as far as I know, however, it is the electronics that can be problematic...

If you want to keep it after the lease, you might want to try to broker a deal with your dealership (or another local dealer) as there buyout will likley be a few thousand less the the residual stated in your lease (they will pay what ever whosale mkt value is, which is probably much less than your lease buyout).

The dealer is probably not encuraged to re-sell you the truck at a lower price than whats stated in your lease buy out. I am guessing that puts them agains BMWFS. However, if you were to keep it, I would explore this anyway, as the savings would help pay for the CPO coverage, or other foms of coverage.

Glow plugs and control unit seem to be an issue at higher miles as well as the DEF injection. I am a bit disappointed as the latter is starting to be a royal PITA. Just brought mine back in to the DLR with CEL for 3rd time in under 12 months. The 3.0 L diesel is very well understood in Europe but the DEF system is a new item on US models only until it is introduced in Europe (may have happened already, IDK).

I read the description of the system Bosch developed for the DEF injection and it is quite a complex system with all kinds of sensors, valves and pumps. Lots of ways it can go wrong.

So, I wouldn't recommend keeping w/o the ext. wty.

As far as I know the E70 never had the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) system in Europe, we just have a DPF (diesel particulate filter).
The new X5 that came out a few months ago may be a different story.

OP- does your state follow the CA Emissions rules? Specifically the CA warranty on emissions parts? Combine that with an extended warranty and you should be covered for another 3 years or so.

I'm planning to keep mine but the DPF removal by Ecotune is on the list of requirements for long term. It's pricey but considering the boost in power and reduction problems, I think it's the best option. If Renntech or some other tune comes out before this winter I'll investigate that option as well.

Delete may be an option, but at nearly 1500.00 USD, and a voided warranty to be expected, not ready for that. No no no.
