2012 35i-carbon from left exhaust
New to me 2012 Certified X5 35i with 30 K miles. Car is white so the black carbon coming from left exhaust is conspicuous.(dealer says there is a baffle so most exhaust comes out the left until at high power). too few miles to tell if engine is using oil.
I find myself having to wash the white cowling under the tip of the left exhaust and the rim of the chrome tip every 50 miles. Anybody else seeing this? Maybe I should have bought a black car. I'm going on a 2,000 mile trip through Nevada soon and will have an opportunity to run 80 mph or so for hours at a time. maybe this will help. this 8 speed transmission is programmed so that the car is at 1200 rpm on our local roads with 45 mph speed limit. 70 mph is only 1700 rpm so I will need to use manual selection to get the rev's up. thanks for any insight JimL |
There is indeed a valve that keeps the passenger side closes below 3000rpm and under low throttle. Nothing suspect about it

Thanks, Jyohay. I'm not concerned about the valve. I'm concerned about the amount of carbon coming out and just asking if others are experiencing this.

I've noticed the black stuff around the left pipe on numerous white E70 35i Xs here in TX. Must be a common issue.

What are your fuel trims? Additive and multiplicative. If you are running rich you can get carbon specs.
|
I don't know my fuel trims. How do I find out?

Computer, handheld code reader..attached to OBDC connector under dash.

Turbo engines will run a bit rich under acceleration,so that is normal.I had a 12 50i a few months ago and it was getting a lot of black around and on the tips. That is not oil burning.
If there is even a slightest deviation in the mixture the CEL will light-up right away. |
