Thermostat DIY?? ADDED DIY 4.8L V8

In search of a DIY for a 2007 4.8 E70 thermostat? I have searched and can't seem to find one? There must be one out there right?
Thanks

UPDATED DIY BELOW FOR 4.8L V8 E70 WITH MECHANICAL WATER PUMP (MUCH DIFFERENT THAN V6 MODEL WITH ELECTRONIC PUMP)

Thank you and I'll use this. But damn I miss the old X5 forum where there seemed to be a DIY for everything. The E70 DIY's are very lacking. Maybe it's my turn to make one and contribute.

bdcanetti, that's why it's up to us to write them.

Good luck.

Look into water pump replacement. They usually get changed at the same time since they are next to each other & a pain to replace. I have a 2008 E70 3.0 and the water pump failed a month ago. I could not figure a way to DIY it. Had to tow to dealer, they replaced both! :dunno:

Dunno what engine you have on yours but on my 3.0is I had to replace the water pump and thermostat a couple months back. It's located under the engine and a pain to DIY. Here is a link to a youtube video that may be helpful. I got it done at an Indy, cost $1300, mostly labor.

I really appreciate the link and the info but I have the 4.8 V8 and it's not an electronic waterpump, It's the good old fashion belt driven one, thank God! The V6 uses the electronic (dumb idea) waterpump. Very different procedures from what I can tell so far.

UPDATED DIY AND BLEED PROCEDURES (4.8 E70)

Holy cow is the DIY for this easy!!!

THIS IS FOR THE 4.8 E70 X5 WITH MECHANICAL WATER PUMP!!!

Different than the V6 electronic pump.

Took 15 minutes and no DIY is required, it's that easy.

Just remove the 2 intake plastic ducts and the thermostat is staring you right in the face.

Then remove the water hose clip, electrical connector and (3) 10MM bolts. That's it. Obvious replace in reverse.

$62 Thermostat (from dealer), $2 for distilled water and $28 in coolant(from dealer). $92 Total and less than 30 minutes of work.

Here is the procedure I used to bleed the system:

First, there is no bleeder screw on 2007 BMW x5 4.8! The hole in the expansion tank that looks like where a bleeder screw should go was an overflow hole which was the explanation for coolant now dripping out from expansion tank.

Second, to bleed the system you do not have to perform the electric pump procedure to bleed the system which requires turning the ignition on but not starting the car, turning on the lowest setting of the heater blower and setting temp to its highest and finally depressing the gas pedal for 10-12 seconds, BECAUSE there ISN'T an electric water pump on a 2007 BMW X5 4.8!

So essentially all you have to do is take the expansion cap off, start the engine and run the engine to bleed the system. After about 15 mins or so you'd of seen air bubbles and possibly a little coolant spill into the overflow hole. Turn the car off and put cap back on.
