Broke Rear Axel Today
Looks like I've joined the club today.
2008 e70 4.8 115k miles (not my car) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af_7IANxMsI I expect the same. My observation so far: car was having the push/pull feel when coming to a stop. Similar to what some of you referred to in other forums. I don't know why. FIXED: New Diff (final drive) :dunno: |

So far I've towed it to local BMW garage (I've had these guys work on some thing before, not a dealer).
We will go from there. Funny, I made an appointment to look at my lowered a4 and check the rear shocks. So, I have a place holder for Monday. Also, we just got hit with some nasty rain. I got the SAV towed and everything moved to the Audi as first drops of rain hit me. In light off all the crap, it was a good day. :) I'll post some updates next week. |
Uggh. Bummer.
Seems like a rare club though.... but somehow that never makes one feel good or special, does it? ;) |

OK Update.
The axle may be saved. Rear diff is totally shredded. So tomorrow I'm either getting a brand new diff or locating a used one. Hopefully my guys will take some pictures. :) |
Maybe get a racing diff? Something that will add some real HP.
(Sorry) Looks like ~$1800 plus labor? I bet used ones will be MUCH more reasonable- sub 500? Stay away from big parts brokers, they just take retail and charge 50%... try and find someone parting a car. |
Final Update:
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...psb9585d38.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps9d5f0d10.jpg The rear diff was replaced. Car drives like it should and is a lot tighter. The damage may have been caused by a previous owner. While there I had my guys flush the transmission fluid and replaced a leaky sealing sleeve. In the end the rear diff broke internally. |
So you got a used diff? Can you post from where?
