Buying a 2012 X5 5.0... Need some direction

Newbie to the forum and looking for some solid advice... I recently bought a Ski Nautique and have been borrowing my wife's suv to tow. I've made the decision to trade in my 2012 535 ix for a 2012 X5 5.0. I have a few questions i'm hoping the forum can help me answer...

1. X5 5.0 reliability? I've owned 3 BMW sedans, but never a BMW SAV. I've heard mixed feedback on reliability. What do I need to know about owning a E 70 X5 5.0???

2. Wheel upgrade? The X5 5.0 that I'm planning on buying has the wimpy 18" wheels. I will keep use these wheels/tires for winter driving but want a 9 month larger set. I've had terrible experience with RFT and want to avoid a rim/tire combo that puts me back into RFT. Is there a go-too wheel that will allow me to source non-RFT tires? I plan on doing the arch wheel flare extension upgrade...

3. Other must-have upgrades? Besides the wheel/flare upgrade, what are the other upgrades I should consider that impact the look and performance.

Sorry for the long post. I appreciate the feedback...

Just picked up the 2012 x5 50 yesterday. Very pleased with it's miles and condition. Now I'm it icing to do the upgrades I posted earlier in the week. 100+ Views and no responses. Humor a new guys, I need some good advice. Thank you.

I just replaced by wheels with Rohana and put on Conti 20 inch tires. Plenty of options out there.

Congrats on the new ride! I have a 21" Sea ray and a race car so I tow a lot, usually in the 50-300 mile range.I did give a lot of thought on the RFT or a spare tire problem. In reality,if you tow something more than 2000 lbs you cannot use a donut spare on the back, and it is probably not highly recommended for the front. So I went with the RFT,but when I go more than 150 miles I put in the trunk one regular 18" wheel with tire for just in case.Good news is that all OEM tire sizes have the same overall outside diameter.I can mix 18" and 20" without problems. My trunk space for a donut spare is occupied of the spare tire for both trailers.Installing a stand for the spare on the trailer may solve the problem with the tire sitting in the trunk.

congrats.. just got mine 3 months ago.. havent gotten to it, but doing same thing
Wheels, front suspension and tune... was looking at the Megan exhaust but they seem to only have the X35 version.. they are the cheapest i've seen, not sure why they have x5m and not 50i..lol

I have removed the post cats/resonators and made a straight pipe to the OEM rear muffler on a '12 50i.It did sound great, relatively quiet on idle and low load and nice note when on throttle.Cheap mod too.

when you are TOWING SOMETHING you can always put the full size spare in/on the thing you are towing.... if you arent towing it, the donut/RFT on the car is fine, And when you have a trailer attached and dont want to rely on a donut (which you shouldnt) you have the full size spare.

Out of curiosity- how many different brands of RFTs did you have issues with?

One?

Which?

You do know it is a feature that many tires have. Like saying "I tried those newfangled 'radial' tires and they were terrible, so I am not going to try those again"

:D

FYI, you are looking at a 50i and not a 5.0...the motor is a 4.4
