The clothes washer has a noise...rather get my hands dirty to try and fix it - successful or not rather than just calling someone who just wants to replace it...

That is so true, we have become a throw away society but a part of the problem is that everything (except for BMWs) is made in China and is cheap compared to the cost of repairing. Another reason is that everyone is trying to make a fast buck off you. I wanted to get a refrigerator repaired and the appliance repair guy took a look multiple times and every time it was a $300 board gone bad, till I repaired it myself. Turned out to be a $10 thermistor. Can't trust nobody no more.
