Wow, X5 repairs are expensive and too frequent
2007 X5 4.8 with 52K miles on it...driven 10 miles a day round trip to work.
Developed an oil leak...took it to BMW...$6400 to fix...leaking timing cover gaskets and alternator bracket...wtf???? Alternator bracket??? Turns out oil lines run through that. So I took it to a local european repair shop and they fixed everything for $3K. Hard pill to swallow! Three weeks later I come to find a pool of antifreeze under my car...$6500 for BMW to fix...same repair shop fixed it for $2K (out of pity and because it wasn't detected earlier they gave me a price break). Turns out the top half of the motor and the transmission has to be removed to fix this coolant leak...I looked it up online to verify. First year of the new E70 had a bad design for a coolant pipe that runs under the intake and cant be removed w/out pulling the transmission. It has the updated coolant pipe so it should never leak again...knock on wood. So, $5K wasted on repairs for an $80K car that is driven 10 miles a day...what a freakin' joke. I love the looks, handling, and power of my X5 but f--- me these repairs are expensive and in my book should never have failed to begin with. |
Yeah you run a risk when you buy a 1st year model. Sorry to hear that. How long have you had it and if you bought it used did you have it inspected ?

If it makes you feel better I brought my X5 to the dealer to get my air suspension fixed and asked them to look for anything else wrong with the car before I traded it in and they gave me this quote. :(
Rear air shocks $1363 Air suspension pump faulty $2462 Valley pan leaking coolant $1084 Both upper timing case covers leaking oil $3082 Transfer case service (faults in system) $339 |

Preferably an X35D...but again sorry you had to deal w/those costly repairs. Before this I had an 06 Honda Ridgeline I bought new and literally had ZERO issues all way up to 103K when I sold it. I do love my X5 even with it's pitfalls...and there's probably still nothing else out there that compares to me at least. Anyway, on another note - Cypress Tx huh...were you by chance recently at a small donut shop off Spring Cypress/N Eldridge maybe 2-3 weeks ago? Not many Silver E70's on Black 215's around here. |

Yes, there was a black one I think but mine was the space gray one right in front of the donut shop/carpet place. Just moved to the area about a year ago and yes had my 2 lil girls with me. I'll say hi next time I see you!

So would you recommend Lucas Auto? That place caught my eye b/c all the $$$ euros parked out front. My indie shop is way back off I10/8 near where I used to live and I'm still trekking it over there for work I can't or don't want to do. Be nice to have an alt indie shop close by. That Eurocarcare place just off 249 took care of me for free when I towed for the first time...had just left my house late evening to tow my M3 to TxTrifecta COTA event and my X overheated...pulled in there just before they closed and my coolant was basically freaking empty b/c It took in almost 2 gallons of coolant!!! I just got it back from Momentum West after some service too WTH! The guys were nice, topped it off n just said come back & see us sometime...emptied one my water jugs & they gave me a gallon to go for my road trip! I made it to Austin n back just fine! Quote:

Based on the list of issues mine has had in it's 150K (Km not miles) history, (Albeit E53, not E70), sunroof rails warp, (Panoramic) Airbags need replacing, transmission needs a rebuild, engine needs a rebuild - and carbon build up means it will happen again Starter motor fails - twice Fuel pump goes - twice Cooling system goes - twice Amplifier fails Window regulators go Nav display fails wheel cracks Seat heaters fail Starter switch fails It's needed to be towed on at least 5 separate occasions. There's much much more but that's all I can come up with off the top of my head. If I didn't have a decent indi shop that kept the cost of repairs lower than the stealer, (Still not what I would call reasonable though!), and my wife didn't love the abominable thing so much, I would have got rid of it long ago. Last straw was when the fuel pump was replaced again last week and within a day started spewing fuel all over the ground. Unfortunately this was when she was next a petrol station - requiring her to abandon the car and emergency services had to be called to clear the area before she could get it towed. The embarrassment of her very identifiable car, (Vanity plates), being very publicly towed away in front of a gathering crowd, with a firetruck following it through the area we live in was the final straw. It will NOT be replaced by another BMW. This one has killed any affinity I may have had with the brand. Still great to drive, but I'm happy to leave the ownership hell to others.
