X5D transmission filter DIY question
 

Hi there - we purchased a 2010 X5d for my wife a couple of months ago and we love it so far. I've done some research and decided to change the transmission fluid and filter. I ordered the kit and attempted to change out the filter/pan this morning, but part of the subframe is blocking access to the 4 most rearward bolts. Does anyone have any advice on how to get these out? A socket definitely won't fit, and neither will a torx key.

All you need is enough space for the torx bit and the rachet will attach in that much space...

My recollection is the torque on those is super low- inch-pounds I think

You can always spray those bolts with penetrating oil and then grab them with a fine point needle nose to loosen them. As Ard mentioned they are very low torque and should come out quite easily.

Still trying to decide if I want to DIY or take it to a local Indy:/ Local Indy in MD says he can do transmission fluid change, mechatronic sleeve, transfer case fluid all for $400 labor. He uses BMW ISID to check temperature for correct fluid fill level and also reset adaptations for transfer case fluid change.

It doesn't look like you can fit a socket/ratchet in between the frame and the bolt so none of those will work. If it wasn't 14 degrees outside right now I'd go out and crawl under to see for myself.

I see. I haven't seen it in person yet but based on the pictures I've seen I thought it may be an option. I will most likely have the local indy do it for me. Don't like being directly under cars on jack stands anyway:D When I have time to get there later this month I will ask them what they use.

Where in MD are you? Or rather, what is the Indy shop that you're referring to? I'm still going to tackle the trans fluid flush myself, but I'd like to get acquainted with a good independent shop

My appointment is tomorrow morning. Place is Beamer Auto in Clinton, MD. All good reviews and he answered every question I had well enough for me to choose them for this. When I asked about the four bolts where the crossmember is he said their method is to lower the crossmember and support the transmission. That I want and hope to see in person. I will report back.
