My passengers are reminded regularly that they are no longer protected by an airbag or seatbelt tensioner. Who wants to replace a control unit, a ballast and a bulb when a headlight burns out, $700 for the three, removing fenderwell and front bumper to do so? The list goes on and on. My next vehicle will be a restomod 50's pick-up with a cable running from my foot to the carb.

Sounds like a 50s pick up would be a better fit.
The learning curve and costs involved with modern cars is steep- mfgs do not make it easy, and BMW is particularly dicky about access to tech info.
