A tube to nowhere?

On my 2008 4.8i I see there is a small (3/8") diameter black hard plastic tube that runs vertically directly next to the engine on the driver's side, towards the front. The top end may normally be under the plastic BMW covers. The other end of the tube disappears under the engine. Is this a vent pipe, as I can't see where it would attach to on the top end?

It used to be connected to your driver's side CCV. There was a service bulletin a while back with an updated part where the driver's side CCV get's routed to the front. SIB attached below.

Funny you posted this! I just saw mine unattached after doing a job in that area and was beating my head into a wall because I couldn't figure out where it went. Glad to know its not just me.

I would bet you two are looking at the trans vent tube, 3/8th inch plastic tube, vertical orientation, under the left plastic coilpack cover, forward location.

Disregard the "sealed trans" BS that BMW service techs and SAs spew, the trans IS vented to the atmosphere, in THAT location.

TiAgX5, your answer seems to fit best but I'm surprised the tube is that far forward in the engine if it is for the transmission. I couldn't find the part diagram showing this on realoem.com. ART-qitec, the SIB you referenced is for a 2006 X5 which makes me believe the part was already updated in later models. Thanks to both.

I did discover what that red handle on top of the battery compartment is for - transmission emergency release, didn't know that. I suppose that's in the owner's manual :p:

A tube to nowhere?

They tend to put them up nice and high to prevent water ingress. Basically, if you're in water deep enough to allow water back in through that tube - water ingress to the transmission will be the least of your troubles!

No idea what the wading depth of the X5 is. Not keen to find out!

Haha. Can't imagine wading depth is all that great since the suspension compressor air intake pipe doesn't sit all that high up but then again I doubt it was ever meant for more than the occasional dirt driveway.
