Groan and clatter from rear hatch

Hey all,
Just bought a CPO 2017 X5 sDrive35i. Am new to XOutpost. I like the car, but my rear hatch rattles and groans when rolling over speed bumps and when the road surface is not perfectly smooth. The dealer said they 'fixed' it, but offered no technical description of the work they did to fix it other than 'we adjusted the bumpers which dry out over time'. Now the clatter is back with a vengeance one week later. I've had BMWs in the past, and know that most dealers are not a source of great satisfaction, so I decided to come here and post my questions in hope that someone is having a similar problem and has found a solution. It is my understanding that this is a fairly common problem with these cars, but the solutions are varied and tend to be 'quick fixes' but not true solutions. I'm sure the cars were silent when new, or they would never have sold. So, whatever is getting loose as the car ages should be identifiable. My latch loops all appear to be solid, and the lock is working properly. The alignment blocks mounted to the body on either side of the hatch have scuff marks on the faces that abut the hatch bumpers. The alignment blocks look like a complicated little piece of german ingenuity. The several torx screws and the springs inside the block lead me to believe they are somehow adjustable, but I have yet to find any written or illustrated procedure that shows how they can be adjusted. The only thing I can conclude is that the hatch seal simply shrinks, taking the outward pressure off the hatch lid, leaving the hatch to move, and the latches to clatter.

Anyone else have a similar issue?

I'm new here but have had this issue with both ny E70 X5 4.8 and my F15 50i, view this link if you haven't resolved the issue. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...f85/1VnXjB0zqv

Brookster,
Thanks for the response! I have been looking at all the links associated with, and accessible from, your link. Very informative, and it offers methods for diagnosing and solving various noise problems in the rear hatch area. I'll do some homework within the links, and get started.
Thanks again.

Please let us know what you find and good luck!

My E53 2003 4.6is had bump stops on the upper hatch that required you to spin a lock pin first then adjust the rubber bump stop. I was constantly fiddling with them to stop the tailgate from knocking. BMW subsequently changed to a spring loaded bump stop. Once I installed those two units, the hatch has been perfect since.

Get my X50i Bible here on the forum. It describes a common fix.

Thanks for the bible! I read through it a couple of times and was curious if something changed? I couldn't find a fix for the cargo or trunk rattle. I did see YouTubers address this. Perhaps you know of a link that is best?

I have an F15 35D had the same issue. Cheap fix for me was to wrap electrical tape on the left and right side of the plastic pins on each side of the trunk lid. It does not make that noise anymore.

Worked for me...

I can attest that this is a good fix. It worked on my 2013 E70.
