Honeymoon's Over (That was fast) Injector Woes? *SOLVED*
 

Well, after ~800mi our first CEL came on with the "new" 2015 x5d. Now, I was anticipating this but it still sucks. The dealer we bought from did not give us the warm and fuzzies that they were selling the highest quality vehicles and this one was they picked up from auction so that made it even less so.

As a result of the above and below I take 90% of the blame for having to deal with a CEL so quickly as we bought this truck because of the options it had and it looked like it was in good condition mechanically. They would not allow PPI off-site and pulled every shady used car dealer trick in the short period of time we dealt with them. I suspect they reset the codes before my on-site PPI guys arrived and the codes took longer than the test drive to pop up. All red flags, so again, I take 90% of the fault on this one. BMW and the dealer split the other 10%.

I grabbed Carly as it is the quickest and easiest way to pull codes. I was mostly concerned with the DDE codes, but it grabbed 92 in total! Mostly different bus communication errors and other various electrical related stuff (no low volt errors). Voltage at idle is 14.6-15v so I'm going to pick up a battery after verifying that the alternator provides consistent voltage under all conditions, not just idle. It's my SOP to grab a battery shortly after purchase of any BMW anyway to set a baseline.

DDE Codes Pulled:

24BB00 - Zero quantity adaptation injector cylinder 1: permissible filtered control duration too high

2A6800 - Smoothness controller cylinder 1: correction amount outside the allowable range

And then a stored "Info" code:

2AD200 - CC message (ID 229): Charging the battery

So I took note of the important codes (should have just created a report, but I'll do that after another hundred miles or so of driving with a new battery) and cleared all the modules. From the short amount of research I've done on the codes it indicates a failed injector in cylinder 1. Truck is driving fine. BMW has an injector related TSB but it only covers MY 2016 and 2017 X5's. But many more year N57T engined vehicles. I think the MY 2015 X5 will be likely added to the TSB in a future revision as they just recently added more vehicles to it in November 2020.

I think the best course of action (albeit expensive one) will be to take it to a BMW dealer when the CEL comes back for the injector related issue and pay to have them replace the injector. Also to call BMWNA just as a papertrail event to inform them of the issue (and ask/beg for any good will). Then, when the MY 2015 is added to the TSB I can submit for any reimbursal I might be eligible for.

Sound like a reasonable action plan? Thanks for any info/advice. We are still enjoying the truck as every used BMW we've ever bought has needed to be brought back up to full service in some fashion or another. So we don't regret the purchase... yet. :D

Morning trix5. So far the cel has not returned. Truck is driving fine from what I can tell though I have not monitored any smoothness data. I-drive shut down randomly yesterday, has done this once or twice before, which supports the failing battery theory I think. E70 I-drive would do that too when it needed a battery. Going to pick one up today hopefully. Install after it stops raining (don't want to take the garage queen e53 out :)) sometime in the next few days.

Hope you feel better soon. With the pandemic on, masks, no in person schools, etc no one in the family has had so much as a cold for going on 18 months. I dread the day one of us gets sick as I'm sure we'll all be knocked on our butts.

Thank you for the good wishes. I got a ways to go. Your approach is also mine. It worked, so far, on the '13 for nearly three years so far. So I was a little ticked when I started one day and was greeted by the red light and warning. It goes away and pops up at will. I cannot work out why the brake controller for the '15 is $1100 and the '13 can be found for under $300. How much real difference can there be? That is except for every change BMW made to make sure one would not fit the other!

When did you join the F15 party?
