An F15 35d has caught our eyes
 

I see our resident E53 expert CW's build thread. This one has about 60k miles and is a 2017. Anything I should be looking at in particular?

Our 4.8is is just shy of 191k miles. The 4.4 E53 is just shy of 70k miles. This F15 diesel would primarily serve bike hauling and trip car duties.

Welp. This one is gone.

Still intrigued tho. The thought of something better than 14.5MPG has visons of fewer fuels stops dancing in my head. :popcorn:

And another is found! Drumming up spousal support for a 300mi trip to take a look this weekend. Let's see how THAT goes!

Getting an average 7 to 8 litres per 100ks with a 3.0D. Around 30 to 35 US mpg?

The F15 35d was a great SUV. We loved it. Just as with the E70 diesels... finding one with maintenance records is key. Buying one without knowing how the previous owner cared for it can be... risky. :D We bought one from a horrible dealer in less than optimal condition but with almost every option because it took us 1.5 years to find. I forget what the MSRP was, but the better part of 90k. We ended up having to put about $2k into it immediately after purchasing it (injector x2, battery, some QoL items - trims and the like). Like the E70 diesel, the emissions system can be a pain. We had NOX sensors, DPF sensor, EGR (x2), and a few other things replaced. Fortunately, most of it was at the dealer's expense. The front driveshaft u-joints have a tendency to fail and cause major damage... a replacement was sub $200. Some guys will say that an extended shaft is necessary like the E53/E70 but I don't believe it unless the Xfer case splines show wear.

If you can, get one with as many options as you can find. You'll appreciate things like the ceramic controls, leather wrapped dash, and radar guided cruise. Trust me. Made the E53 feel like the dinosaur it is, and the e70 feel like a Neanderthal. Both obviously very good in their own way... but not nearly as refined or modern feeling.

Few things we disliked: The AC always took awhile to get truly cold in really hot weather. And the ride, in comfort, was VERY soft compared to the E53 and E70. Too much so. We always drove it in sport. So make sure you find one with the adaptive handling package. Makes a huge difference. Though you will have to deal with air bag issues like the E53 and E70. :bustingup
