The X6 ... i don't get it?

Can anyone explain to me what market segment the X6 is meant to fill? I don't see who would buy one of these instead of a 5 (possibly touring version), 7, X3 or X5. Considering the amount of money it costs to develop and launch a new model, there must be a hole in the market that this car is meant to target. But I just don't see it?

I'm in the UK - can anyone compare this car to any current UK available brands which have something similar? Or, is the idea that the X6 will replace one of the current models?

I guess you missed my comments in the other thread. See post 28 in this thread

One thing to consider is that the purpose of the X6 might not be to make money at all - the purpose of BMW is not to make money on all their models, but rather to make money as an overall brand. I doubt anyone expect the X6 to become a volume seller. Still - I suspect that the X6 has not been all that expensive to design (basicly an X5 in drag).

Some years ago BMW stated that they wanted to target more diverse market segments and become a volume seller rather than a niche product - since then we've seen the 1 series and coming up the V/F series. Some of these segments can only support low volume haute couture models. So the purpose of this car is to be there just to get more BMW badges on the road. That is my theory anyhow :)

Thanks - will go and read :) I did have a quick browse through some of the other threads and didn't spot anything, but didn't get as far as post #28!

I could see this having the opposite affect though... one of the reasons I like BMW is because there aren't so many BMW badges on the road compared to some of the more "common" makes. If everybody had one, I'd be looking to buy something else! I think most people are aware of the brand BMW - they associate it with high end luxury cars. The 1 series is dreadful and has already damaged the brand in my eyes. As a company, they should stick to what they do well :)

Yeah, well, Porsche shouldn't build a 4 door ride...but they're going to. Sometimes car companies get a little greedy for market share, especially companies that don't have a 'cheap' equivalent. For example: Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus....

Shh..before BMW buys Volvo to fill that gap

I can see your concern regarding flooding the market with a product brand. However, as long as the auto drives as uniquely as a BMW does, I don't mind them expanding their brand - a la the 1er.

The closest competitor I can think of is the infiniti FX45. Still BMW said that this car will open a new segment. ( just like MB with their CLS ).
