Guys, I don't want to race the thing. I want one vehicle to do it all. Obviously, there are not enough real convertible lovers here. The X6 will have a lower center of gravity than the X5. How many of us have rolled our X5s? With the top down, the center of gravity would be lower. In the summer, I could enjoy top down driving in the safest convertible on the planet. If a Z4 convertible crashed into my X6 convertible, guess who would come out on top. Active roll bars would be standard in a BMW X6 convertible. After enjoying any day over 50 degrees with the top down, I could drive the same vehicle through a snowstorm. Heck, I just might put the top down during the snowstorm.

I feel like the first guy who said the earth is round. It is easy to criticize an idea that seems "crazy", but what good are all the two seat convertibles to a man with a wife and two kids.

I used to drive convertibles until an Expedition turned a corner and I saw the bumper coming right at my head. There was no accident; I just felt less safe in a low riding convertible. At the time, I realized my young children need me alive and able to function better than a knee-jerk critic. I love top-down driving like a biker loves his harley.

My post began with the words, "I realize it is a longshot . . ." CAN YOU READ?

Although I am fully aware BMW does not plan to build a convertible version of the X6, I just wanted to see if any others shared my dream of a safe (unlikely to roll over), large, powerful, sporty SAV/SAC/SUV convertible.

I understand many people have no use for such a vehicle. Thomas Edison's neighbor thought the light bulb was a dumb idea. Candles worked fine. Mr. Snotty said that Edison's diagram was the dumbest sketch ever posted at www.lanternworld.com.

After driving an X5 for over seven years, I have never come close to rolling over due to its high center of gravity. I would be perfectly happy with a BMW X6 convertible.

I apologize to those who are offended by my dumb idea. If you cannot think outside the box, and your neuron gaps function at dial up speed, you may never enjoy the fun of toying around with new ideas.

This forum was born when roadfly tried to suppress the thoughts and ideas (and porn :stickpoke ) of some of the founding members. I know vinuneuro knows all about it. Comments like Mr. SNIFFLES vote for dumbest post of the year are lame, unnecessary, annoying, show a complete lack of imagination, and serve to drive away newbies with very innocent questions.

Nothing personal. I thought your rant was well done. The problem is that there are many on here who think that the concept of the X6, however well done it is by BMW, is just a little silly. A convertible version just takes it one step further. IMO, a high driving position and sporty don't go together. I think that my X5 drives great, but I wouldn't call it sporty, rather it is very well mannered for an SUV.

Anyway, I am not adding my name to the 'build me an X6 convertible' petition, but I wish you well in your quest. :thumbup:

OK, found one. Not necessarily sporty, but a convertible version of a coupe, lifted up on an AWD platform. Not my taste, and apparently they didn't sell well, but I think this was the original genesis of the sporty convertible AWD SAC. Too bad it is beige. If you look closely you can see what the BMW X6 designers were inspired by.

CGSTL, no worries. I enjoyed the pig. In fact the first two replies were spot on. M-Individual even gave me the thumbs up for being a dreamer.

When some person with allergies nominated this for the dumbest post of the year, I was not going to sit quiet. Hopefully SNIFFLES found some kleenex.

Kudos to JCL for his welcome contributions to this thread even thought he has no desire for a BMW X6 convertible. I did in fact own an International Scout II a long time ago. Although it was not a ragtop, the top did unscrew and come off. Unfortunately, the door handles also came off due to rust. As a professional lurker, I am never surprised to see somebody fail to actually comprehend a posted comment. JCL correctly dismissed the Chevy as a two seater. I will admit, a corvette engine in a sporty 4 seat pickup would have been perfect for my needs. Unfortunately, Chevy made it butt ugly and only installed two seats.

I have always thought the AMC Eagle was an idea ahead of its time. Since it was dirt cheap, you cannot compare it to the X6. The Infiniti FX would have been my current ride, but I could not give up the heated steering wheel in the X5. The Cayenne S almost won me over, but the local BMW dealer made me an offer I could not refuse to trade in my August 2000 build X5 for another one in October 2004.

So . . . I have a dream and the Jeep Wrangler (although cool) does not quite have the on road manners I need. Now if they built a Wrangler SRT8, I might be tempted. I do really like the JGC SRT8 and its beastly 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

The X6 gets a :thumbup: from me. I really liked the attached X6 concept and fortunately, the real thing comes close. I just wish . . .

Again, nicely posted. Kind of reminds me of the prose of a guy named Personna Non Grata. Keep dreaming - That's what brought us the X5 and now the X6. And who knows, maybe some dude from Pimp My Ride is lurking also and will take you on as a promo job :).

Don't let the concept tag on Audi's Cross Cabriolet Quattro fool you. Our sources say the German automaker's Los Angeles show car is definitely what we'll see when the Q5 arrives in early 2009. The two-door four-seater forges new ground in the SUV market with a convertible soft top that stows in just 17 seconds for a view undisturbed by B-pillars or a roll bar.

Powering the concept is the latest ultra-low-emissions, turbocharged, 3.0-liter, 240-hp I6 diesel mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Underpinnings borrow heavily from the rest of the Audi family, with chassis and drivetrain from the A4/A5, combined with the Q7's continuous damping controls and electric ride-height adjustment. Audi drive select also appears, with its three preset engine, transmission and suspension configurations. Ceramic disc brakes provide stopping power.

Inside, the concept features a 505-watt Bang & Olufsen digital sound system, Audi's Multi-Media Interface with Google Earth navigation and a touch pad for screen selection. Large doors provide easy access to the back seats.

Look for the production Q5 to bow in either New York or China next spring, with U.S. sales beginning in 2009.
