Mineral Silver X6 50i

Picked up my X6 5.0 today at SunMotorCars BMW in Mechanicsburg, PA, and drove it straight home to Virginia. Had trouble keeping speed under 75. Very smooth ride inspite of having sport suspension, 19" Michelins and 41/42 PSI nitrogen. Really glad I got the active steering and heads up display. I didn't have to take my eyes off the road anytime even when using navigation. Active steering is amazing inasmuch as it eliminates the differences of steering resistance between slow and fastest speeds. It does not, as some people have mentioned, take steering feel away. Just the opposite, in fact. The new I-drive is terrific, and so much more intuitive than the 2009 model. I also think that the premium HK Logic 7 audio system has been upgraded in the 2010 model year. Vastly improved from the system I auditioned in a 2009 5.0 just two weeks ago..with the same settings.

Thanks for the encouraging words. Will post pics asap, but got to play several concerts over the next few weeks, and want go get one of my National Symphony colleagues to get a photo of my X6 with me wearing my full dress. Such an elegant looking work or art in Mineral Silver.

I originally ordered my X6 5.0 in Vermillion Red, per suggestion of my dealer. It was indeed very sporty looking. But by chance, I was driving by VOB BMW in Rockville, Maryland two days after I had ordered my vehicle, and thought that I had seen something really beautiful through the windows of their showroom. But didn't know what it was. So I parked, went inside, and saw a 2009 X6 3.5 in Mineral Silver. It was amazing. Truly a work of art. So I immediately called my dealer and changed the color on my order. He was not too excited, but did what I requested. The day that my X6 arrived at my dealer, I got a call from the sales manager telling me that everyone there was going crazy over the Mineral Silver X6, including all walk in customers. This is a color that will not work on a lot of vehicles. Only offered on the 6 series coupes and X6. I have never considered myself to be visually well oriented, but in this case, it was just dumb luck that it worked out.

Thank you. Now I have to learn how to drive this thing without getting in trouble with the law. BTW, for what it's worth, the new i-drive is much more intuitive and direct than previous versions, and the 2010 premium Harman Kardon Logic 7 sound system has been improved with the new digital algorithms devised by HK's Lexicon division.

I will post some photos as soon as the weather here and my totally crazy symphony schedule allows.

Thank you. I will. They say that when a guy gets to be my age (63), they go out and get a red sports car. I had a red sports car at 40 and hated it. So now I have a huge 4 wheel drive vehicle that drinks fuel and roars when on full throttle. Probably should have bought a Prius. But at a certain time, it makes sense to not make sense. How's that for a justification?

Sorry, pics are coming. Been so damn busy in rehearsals, playing concerts, making reeds, and teaching bassoon students (and then it rained for two days) to take pics. Will try to do so tomorrow. BTW, this vehicle is the best I've ever had. Active steering and adaptive drive with sports package is amazing. It just doesn't make sense that something this big should go so fast and handle so well. Build quality is superb. Anyone who says American workers cannot build quality products is plain wrong. I cannot wait to take a tour of the plant in SC. Heck, my contrabassoon is built in South Whitley, Indiana and is better than the German made instruments that cost three times as much. And I bet you didn't know that the best high end audio equipment in the world has always been designed and manufactured in the USA. We can do it better here.

OK. I took ten photos of my new 2010 X6 5.0 today, and tried to upload them to this forum, but a message came up telling me that they could not be attached because of some security issue. Does anyone know about this, and how I can get these posted? Thanks. BTW, all ten photos are in JPEG format.

Michelle 11-07-2009 02:37 PM

Create a Photobucket account and upload them there, then copy the [IMG] code here. :D

OK. I think (maybe) that I finally got the photos of my 2010 X6 5.0 that I took today in front of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (where I work) posted to this forum. Interior shot is not so good, but security guys were bugging me to move the car, so I didn't have a lot of time to fiddle with the camera. I got all options, except for 40 hp upgrade (this thing is already too fast) and the 20" performance tires (since I drive up to northern Michigan a lot in the winter, and need the all-season traction). Good news is that I got the Michelin rft's (also got the spare tire) with 41/42 PSI front/rear with nitrogen fill and the ride is firm but not too stiff even in sport mode. No problems so far except for the fuel mileage...but I knew that going into this deal. My colleagues in the National Symphony are going nuts over this thing. I may have started something here...

Damn, interior shot didn't make the post. Will do that later. Have to leave now to play a concert (so that I can pay for this thing).

Low Note 11-08-2009 12:29 AM

Back home from playing the concert (listened to some huge choral works on the premium sound system in my X6 on the way home, and it definitely has been upgraded from 2009 model; it.sounds amazing). I design high end audio systems, home theaters, and pro studios, and the sound I'm getting from this HK Logic 7 system compares favorably against the best studio monitoring setups I've installed. Incredible detail and retrieval of ambience at all volumes with very deep and fast low frequency response. Hard to believe that this system uses class D amplification. Much better than the 6.5 grand B&O system option in the Audi Q7 (I did an A/B comparison the other night, and the difference between the two was startling).

Here are two interior shots of my 2010 BMW X6 5.0. Not the greatest resolution, but you'll get the idea. Black perforated leather for active ventilated seats and dark bamboo trim. Didn't go for the leather dash.

Thank you. I originally ordered this vehicle in Vermillion Red, but just happened to pass by VOB BMW in Rockville, Maryland, and saw this thing through the showroom window. Went inside, got a close look, and immediately called my dealer to change the color to Mineral Silver. He though that I was nuts until the X6 arrived at his dealership. Everyone was all over this thing. So not more of his customers are considering the MS for their X6's. Now all I have to do is twist a few arms of my National Symphony colleagues (we have a sizeable "car guy" contingent) to go for some X6's. Two are already thinking about it.

Thank you, brocks. Mineral Silver is only available (so far) on 6 series and X6. I am not sure if it would work well on 3,5,7 X3 or even X5. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the X6 is that it is built by Americans. Goes to show that we can still do it as well or better than anyone else. BTW, I am going to be up in your neck of the woods tomorrow, driving to Long Pond, PA to have my bassoon repaired. Used to be a very boring 4 hour trip. I think that this time it will be a bit faster and not at all boring.

Congrats! She's a beauty.

I've never seen a mineral silver in the metal. I've actually only seen black and tasman in person. I bet the pictures don't do it any justice. Enjoy. :)

Thank you! You are right. The slight golden hue does not come through well in digital imaging. One of the nicest things about this color is that it changes a lot depending on the light at different times of the day. Many layers of color depth in this paint.

And that's what I like about this color. There are only handful of BMW colors which change with light(LeMans blue is one). I think pictures do not do justice to this color, you have to see in person and really appreciate.

It's interesting that no other auto manufacturer that I know of offers this level of metallic paint design. The X6 was designed by a French sculptor, who has very little experience in automotive design. However, I have to wonder if he had something to do with the development of the Mineral Silver paint. Chris Bangle had nothing at all to do with the X6, which (in my opinion) is just as well.

BTW, I am going to be doing an in-depth review of the new 2010 Harman Kardon Logic 7 audio system that is part of the two grand premium sound upgrade in the 2010 X6. There have been some significant design changes in this system over the 2009 model (although there has not been any announcements from BMW about this), and the sonic improvement is not subtle. So stay tooned...

Thanks, Michelle. I took it on a long road trip today (still on the road) up to northern Pennsylvania. When I stopped for fuel, a guy came up to me who I had passed on the highway, and had followed me because he wanted to know "what the hell this thing was". I gave him a complete tour of my X6, and he said that he was going "directly" to my dealer (SunMotorCars BMW) in Mechanicsburg to get info and place an order. So I think I may have sold an X6 5.0.

Yes, as a matter of fact, this fellow already knew about some other Bimmer forums, but I did tell him about Xoutpost.com, since he wanted to know if I had any photos that he could use for reference (and to help convince his spouse, who seemed to be very interested by not yet quite totally with the program). I was followed by a couple of BMW's for about half an hour today (one 3 and one 5), and they kept passing me then falling back again. Guess a lot of Bimmer owners have never actually seen one of these on the road. Not surprising, since only 30% of production stays here in the US.
