Selling US cars to Canada

Has anyone ever heard about the need to change the instrument cluster on 2008 09 X6's being sent to Canada? The speedo already has Km/hr and the IDrive can set the rest.

Shouldn't be more than programming since you have km/h on the speedo. Check Registrar of Imported Vehicles for all the rules and regs. Note that the free maintenance doesn't apply here to a US vehicle.

Thank you!

Don't you also have to pay duties, taxes...GST+PST?
Don't know what's the advantage to a Canadian buyer to import from US.

Since the X6 is manufactured in the United States, it falls under the Free Trade Agreement and therefore no additional duties are levied. Although no reprogramming is required, if you want the cruise control speed display in km/h then it will need a reflash.

A lot of foreigners buy in the US due to the substantially lower costs and higher standard equipment level. Folks from Germany will import US-spec BMWs to Germany; despite the transport, duties, and reprogramming costs, some folks still come out ahead.

Absolutely. GST+PST will apply. The GST will be collected at the border while the PST will be collected when the vehicle is registered by the province and plated. It may be different in provinces which combine these taxes into the HST. In this case it may be collected at the border.

Registrar of Imported Vehicles should link to duties. I'm not 100% on the duty free status as that depends not only on the place of manufacture but also whether the parts content make it a domestic vehicle under NAFTA. Again, the Registrar should have that info.

This process was correct as of a couple years ago but I understand it hasn't changed.

we bought an 2004 X5 in 2007 and saved thousands of dollars...
you can save even more on a new vehicle. I try and buy as many auto parts in US every time I go, it is way cheaper down there for many things...
