MS supports their operating systems for seven years. Consider that BMW typically has a multi-year development cycle, followed by a seven year model run. People buy that product part way through its life (ie, 5 years from initial design) and then hope to run it for 10 years, which makes 15 years from inception. That is twice what MS can manage, and they are in the computer business.
